Backpacking across Europe eh
    #7513072 - 10/13/07 06:31 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

So, I've been thinking... Before the world ends, before I get tied down to something, before i end up having kids or getting thrown in jail, I figure I'd like to go backpacking across Europe. I'm just not to sure how this is all going to work though, I know i need a shit load of savings I'm thinking like ten grand or more... But, dunno, I could just go with a little bit of cash and pan handle on the street or something, or make some cash working somewhere. I could sleep in hostels and all that, and being a Canadian I know i could make some friends over there...

So my question is, has anyone ever done this? just picked up and gone backpacking across Europe? Just hike around and check stuff out? If so how long did you go for and how much cash you spent and all that.. I haven't looked into it much its just an idea... But it would be crazy sweet to do.

I'd say those are just obstacles my friend, you just have to find a way to do it if you want it.

I'm going to do this the summer after next. You probably won't need ten grand. Airfare plus $80 a day would buy you a great adventure if you're not adverse to staying in hostels.

www.lonelyplanet.com is a great resource.

lonelyplanet is annoying - anytime anything or place gets mentioned there, it blows the fuck up within a year.

10 grand is an insanely large amount of money. not sure how you like to travel, but based on my experiences, that would be more than enough for a solid year of backpacking.

i traveled a lot in europe throughout the years i lived there, a small amount before then, and elsewhere since (but haven't been back to europe for 2 years). sometimes in great posh style, sometimes with literally less than $100 to my name (and weeks from home). really helps to know people who live where you are traveling through, but if you're sociable enough & a bit of an alchy, you can always meet people :rainbowcloud:

if you have specific questions about specific places, feel free to hit me up

I would forget about hostels. They can be pretty cheap but if you don't sleep in hostels then you can save serious money. Such a long trip, you can't spend so much money. It's the compromise. Get some outdoor sleeping aquipment, and keep buying weed and smoke people out for rides.

You can also go to foodbanks to save money, but I wouldn't. Think about 10,000 to begin then sleeping in a hostel every night. Your money won't last very long.

what's the deal with canadians and backpacking? And why do foreigners like canadians more? It's not like they're so different from Americans.

Just whatever you do, make the most of your time. Seek edification, don't take life for granted. Life not about merely physical pleasures.

Bah, I think of it kind of more of an invisible line that people have created between the places they live, then called themselves a name like American or Canadian to bring people further apart... In my travels I've met a few people I don't get along with, but I've also met a lot of awesome people. I don't think that the land on the other side of the invisible line has more assholes than nice people at all. It's all the way you look at it. Everyones equal in my eyes.

But yeah, thanks for all the info there guys... I've decided to start off in Ireland then make my way around, see what happens. I found a couple people that are up for it, so hopefully this summer I'll be cruising around Europe. It would be awesome to get a chance to check out the pyramids too, but thats a little close to the oil...  Not sure if I want to venture around that area

i met canadians who were backpacking through the baltic states and from here they went to finland or something. nicest guys i ever met on the road. i was just hitching a ride home and i met them by the road: they were going the wrong way and i went over to help them find the right highway to the right city. i gave them a book i wrote, they gave me some brand new flip-flops

you should get the eurail pass, if youre under 25 its like $600 for a month, unlimited train rides to most EU countries

you should also stay at youth hostels. $15-30 a night for a bed, just watch your passport and wallet and shit when rooming with others of course.

I can give you a place to shack up in in northwest Ireland might be able to find you some short term work air fare from Dublin to just about any EU destination is dirt cheap in fact most times my cab fare to the airport is more than my ticket to Netherlands or Germany or the UK.There may be others in the EU that can help you along the way too. Me and the wife are kinda old 50ish but still cool can show you some wild ass old druid sites pick some liberty's and go dancing with the wee folk.. Man me and the ole lady moved to the EU with less than 10k get a sleeping bag and a good hikers tent and you can still do Europe on 20$ a day my advice is make friends with EU members and don't wait till you are old to chase your dreams

My 18 year old friend did 6 months, with about 4 grand and a europass last year. He was from Canada, hit something like 23 countries, and had a great time.

Try couchsurfing and similar sites, to find free places to stay.
