Should I dunk?
    #7511746 - 10/13/07 12:00 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Should I dunk the BRF cakes I plan to crumble into a bed and then case with verm? Also ...is their any benefit to using miracle grow plant food in the water the cakes are dunked in? I can see how adding fertilizer to and casing material would just make it easier for contams to grow, but what about just the cake when 100% colonized?

Many will say no need to dunk if your crumbling/casing...but I do it anyways...you can't go wrong with a fully hydrated cake IMO.

And I definatly wouldn't mess with any miracle grow or other fertilizers unless your thinking of Miracle Grow Moisture Control as a casing, we're growing boomers here not tulips. Also in addition to making it easier to contam, adding nutes to your casing will most likley make the myc grow straight through it, defeating the purpose of a casing layer.

I use microwaved MGMC and some verm as my casing, and it works great.

Chemical fertilizers feed plants, not fungi. There is no reason to dunk a cake you're breaking up for spawn. The moisture is in your casing layer. I'd suggest anything else but plain verm. If all you have is vermiculite, I'd suggest a dunk and roll, and forget the casing.
