Light cycles for mixed indoor garden

So I recently got a 400w HPS light and am trying my hand at having a varied indoor ethno garden. So far the plants that are going to be under the light are:
T. Bridgesii, pereskiopsis, astrophytum, and other cacti Calea Zacatechichi Poppies Maybe Psychotria viridis to the side
So that being said what kind of light cycle would be good for this? How do you gardeners out there growing several things pick a light cycle? Is a 16/8 or 15/9 timing good maybe?

Yeah somehow I'm drawn to 15/9 as a solution. It just seems like that'd be a pretty good late spring day or something to me and I don't think most plants are as light hungry as say MJ is. I have to say I'm loving that the HPS brings up the temperature a good 6°F since it's cold out but I'm not looking forward to summertime. Guess I need to look up cooling methods and see which will work best for my situation.
I'd definitely like to hear what a lot more of you are doing for a light cycle in this scenario.

my cacti are loving 12/12 and I think I remember reading somewhere that that is the best setting for Trichs. They breathe at night so is my Calea Psychotria Viridis also and my Acacia Maidenii and Mimosa Hostilis

Hrm...12/12. I take it your priority in your indoor garden are the trichocereus cacti? The poppies in particular are what make me want to extend the daylight. Plus then I get to see my little guys lit up more often, though the extra few hours of not using electricity would also be nice.
Well thanks for the input. I'm glad to hear you both seem to be having success with your different timings.

Oh really? Geez it's insane how much reading I've done to gloss over something like the light cycle for poppies haha. Maybe I will really do a 12/12 then. Guess I'll read up a bit more about this, retrace my steps. Thanks a lot.

poppies dont NEED 24 hours of light to flower, just need to increase the amount of light available to force flowering... so 18/6 would be fine for flowering if u vegged them on 12/12...
opposite of MJ for example, due to MJ being autumn flowering and poppies being summer flowering... consider wot time of year a particular plant grows and flowers and that dictates wot photoperiod u should use to force flowering in an artificial environment...

I think most plants do well with summer light my preference 18/6. I only change this in the case of my MJ to flower... again my preference.
