 Spirituality or excuse to feel good???

I was recently posed with this question:
I was telling some non entheogen using friends how I believe that psychedellics are a gift from God and that they can bring you closer to God and to other people and make you more self aware. (yes I believe in God). These friends told me that is is a sin "to defile the temple" and that my reasons were just an excuse to use drugs and feel good. Do you think that is true or is there some deep meaning to be had in a drug induced state?

I find it funny that your friends call eating magic mushrooms "defiling the temple." Are they assuming, by saying this, that mushrooms are harmful for your body?
Do your friends drink pop? Do they eat meat? These things can be more harmful than the little bit of damage that mushrooms can do.
And besides, mushrooms are natural. They were put here by God, so to speak. I believe that using them CAN be a very spritual experience and bring you closer to whatever God you believe in. The most important part though, is that the experiences you have with the mushroom should be taken over into your normal, sober life. They should serve to make you a better person.
The best thing you can do with friends like these is try to enlighten them of the facts in a positive way.

I will use the tools available to me to help build my temple.
If a particular tool doesn't work, I will stop using that tool.

Magic mushrooms i would say are here to aid in the discovering of your true self. Having said this, people who just take them for the reasons of "getting fucked up" or just for the pure fun of tripping, are missing the point. They are taking this substance and just missing eveything that is passing by them, missing out on the enlightenment it brings. I strongly suggest you do not make this a habit to do mushrooms all the time, however i think it is a great tool, if used right, and in the right setting.
For people who are looking only to get wasted and such, please don't use mushrooms, that's what alcohol is for. just my thoughts!

I'll be honest i do drugs just to feel good and get fucked up, i dont go for the whole "god put this here for me to get fucked up thing" i dont think god put this stuff here for us to get off on, but i dont think he cares about that anymore than he does beer or redmeat. i think the temple shit is misinterepreted anyway. well im really high and ive been sitting here for like 3 minutes just now wondering what the hell i was typing about.so i know it was about drugs or mushrooms but i dont know what about so im just gonna send it

Adamist said it all really. Take what you can from an experience. If you find it to be spirtual, then it is. It's that simple.
This line from your post really struck me:

This says a lot. Since when did we need an excuse to feel good? When did this thought enter our minds?

while i do like the feeling that alcohol brings....it makes you feel like shit the next morning. thats why i like shrooms because no hangover.

of course we do them because they feel good, but thats not the only reason and to me it not even the number one reason. they just make you a little more aware and in tune with yourself and your surroundings.
