Question about my incubator

Hey, my incubator is a plastic 20 litre storage box, with the inside coated in foil, and a 6 watt floresent light to increase tempreture (get its to around 80).
Anyways getting to the point when I take the lid of it smells "electricial". Obviously this smell is coming from the lighting, but can this do any harm to the jars? (pftek)
Dumb question maybe, but need to eliminate possibilities why my myc aint growing. Got a new syringe today so hopefully it will work.

the smell part won't matter, but do you have your lighting inside the incubator? An incubator can't have any light, it needs to be dark.

Cheers. I keep my jars in black socks to stop light.

Sure it can have light. They'll still colonize fine.

Incorrect. There is no reason to provide light during colonization, but also no reason to block light. It has no effect on colonizing myclelium. RR

Without disrespect to the poster, this statement is completely incorrect. There are no light (or it's absence) requirements for our favored strains of mushroom. Some species - such as agaricus bisporus - do require darkness during incubation, p. cubensis is not one of them.

Also, I would to add that the smell you're noticing is most likely ozone and in concentrate quantities - such as a closed tote - is toxic for pretty much all living matter.
And it's coming from the fact that the aluminum foil + the transformer in your florescent light are working together to form a very makeshift corona discharge ozone generator. lol...

Check out this one.
It goes into lots of stuff, but the incubator part is what I liked.
Mine is MUCH smaller. I only used two 5g bins, $30 heater from pet smart (submersible good to 30g I think), and instead of tape I bought pipe fastener hardware (for copper water piping, cheap at home depot). The hardware required the bottom tub to have two holes drilled in it. So its like hex bolts going through the bin into these two holder things. I used RTV (red) gasket sealer (great for making kick ass lids as well) to seal up the holes. And besides that its the same principal as the link up there. I put it in another bin, just in case it leaked (it didn't), with a blanket on it. Set to 82 (brings it to about 80) and your good to go. In the months where I have to use it (now) I have full colonization times in about 5-7 days). So I like using it.
I can fit 9 qt jars in it. That is plenty for me.
Have Fun, -CK
