Are jars with concave bottom a problem for DIY magnetic stirrers?
    #7507496 - 10/10/07 11:31 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I just constructed a nice little magnetic stirrer out of old PC fan, a plastic junction box, and a clear CD case front panel. :-D I am waiting for some of the liquid nails to dry / cure now. I was looking at my mason jars and something concerned me. I plan to use 300 ml of LC each in a couple half pint jars however the bottom of the jars I have are slightly concave. I constructed the magnet as close to the cd case as humanly possible so its nice and flush. Do I need to get some special jars with flat bottoms? The concave hump is rather small but I figure i'd still ask

it depends on the strength of your magnet. The only way to know for sure is to set up a test run.

Post some pics either way, that way others can benefit from your success. If it turns out to be a failure maybe you can help prevent someone from failing the same way in the future.

Cool. Make sure you do pics of the whole process. The hard drive mag should = success. The little bit of space under the concave bottom of the jar should be OK.

But if you do pics of the entire process, you could make a tek. That or someone could make one using your help.

Either way be sure to post pics. That way someone trying to do the same will have some idea of what they are getting into. Pics truly are worth a thousand words, especially to those with no past knowledge of what you are trying to do.

Peace,
snakeman
