Uhh soo I have shitload of libs and I am drying them as of right now. This is my first time picking and drying so I need some help:
Maggots: I see them in the gills of a few of the libs and I toss those mushrooms out..Is this wise? Drying: I put the libs in different shoeboxes making sure that none of them are touching each other and then I close the lid? Is this a proper method of drying, or should I just open air dry them?
Also, I am curious to know if anybody ever finds liberty caps that are more domed than conical. I am finding that the vast majority are conical but there are a few (mainly fresh) mushrooms that are more spread out than the standard liberty caps. Is this common? I mean they have all of the properties that P. Semileanceata have exapt cap shape. They even have the nipple.

The two friends of mine that I've seen dry, have put them on newspaper, with another newspaper on top.

about the maggot question, i have found very very tiny maggot/wormlike organisms on cyans also. what i do is just put a fan to them put them on newspaper and all the maggots eventually die , turning into tiny sand like particles. just pour them out and brush any remainding guys off a they're ready to eat.

But don't you think that those wormy things are a sign of rotting?

not necessarily. bugs and animals will start eating your mushrooms as soon as they are existent. my cyans usually have squirrel bites in them and also the mini maggot things too

Lol well I had never heard about this kind of thing until now. So obviously when I found little gross maggots I was like what the fuck...am I really going to eat these? Not a lot of people mention maggots when they talk about mushroom hunting and the whole drying process.

man all u have to do is just dry them out nice and good. put a fan to them to speed up the process. the maggots will soon dehydrate and die, then all you have to do is pour all them in the trash and you have dried cyans.
and also put your mushies in a strainer and try to strain as many of those tiny maggots down the drain, this seems to help me too.

if you hunt and eat wild mushroom, just expect that about 0.3-5% of your diet is actually maggots. lolz.
you can see where they enter the mushroom usually, the fly lands on the cap or base of the stem and lays an egg and its on from there on.
if u put them on a newspaper (dont put one on top) and put something on the opposite side as the fan (a wall for them to blow into once they dry and are so light the fan would ordinarly blow them away) they should dry fairly quick, and any maggots will either crawl out and try to make a dash across the paper only to die a few inches away, or will be preserved inside your mushroom for your nutritional benefit.

that would cause the moisture in the container to build up to a point where it wouldnt readily saturate, and in turn your mushrooms would mold, quickly.
put them on a piece of paper with a fan on em and somethin to catch em once they get lighter, eating maggots is inevitable if u collect wild mushrooms for food.
also, i saw ur supposed "lib" photos, theres more than one species of mushroom in the photos, and 99% of them dont look like libs.

I know this was like a year ago...but I was just mulling over old posts. And I am afraid you are mistaken about my lib picks. All were libs, the pictures just didn't do any justice to them. Libs are to easy to ID for me to fuck that up. Maybe in the heat of picking I will pick up a foe but I will toss those out later when I am in the drying process.
