Zen saying.......(Changed my perspective)
    #7507374 - 10/10/07 10:32 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

"How will you jump off a 100 foot pole?"

Think about it. Its a life changing saying if you realize what it means. We all know what it means, however once i viewed it like the saying, its really a cool and happy way to look at it. Just thought id share  :sunny:

I must be pretty fucking stupid because it's meaning is evading me.

My only answer is: Climb a 100ft pole and jump off it.

Seeker, I'm at a lost for what this means. Closest meaning I can come up with is not to get girls pregnant.

This is a classic zen koan. I think a more accurate translation is how do you climb above or step up over a 100 foot pole. That this makes no sense is the whole point. It is impossible to give a rational answer. These and other koans like "what is the sound of one hand clapping" are meant to frustrate and confuse the rational intellect until all of the sudden the mind slips out of a rational way of thinking into purely unconstructed form of intuitive apprehension. This usually results in some level of awakening. So its pretty simple, keep that question in mind all day everyday and eventually you'll realize true reality. Okay maybe its not that simple.

It's all good, my second answer was to jump off holding 99 red balloons filled with helium....

LOL people think about it.

How are you going to jump off a 100 foot pole? YOUR NOT GOING TO SURVIVE. There is absolutly no way to survive a 100 foor drop. It basically means that we are all going to die. No matter what religion, no matter how powerful, or smart you are.....Every last one of us isnt going to survive a 100 foot fall.

Everyone is going to have to take the leap someday...."EVERYONE". So how will you jump off the pole? Pissed off and afraid that your human fate involves death? Or accept it and smile about it.

Best answer i can think of. Actually my friend pointed out that it involes death. Just thought id share.

Yea, but the question didn't state anything about surviving or not surviving.

Its a "Zen" Saying. It doesnt have an answer and could be taken a lot of diffrent ways. But if you view it in the aspect of death it makes alot of sense.

Or at least i thought

Sir Richard Brandson dropped further than 100 feet the other night and only hurt his wrist and ripped his pants....

It seems like a pretty fucked up and dysfunctional "Zen" saying if the only answer is to commit suicide, and then be happy about it....!?  :smirk:

What proof do you have that the pole is vertical?
It might be 100 feet long, lying on the ground.

yea spiritual, I think your little mystical saying doesn't have much grounds in reality. like one poster said about some guy who did survive a 100ft drop. plus, the quote doesn't make much sense either. you should start reading about other religions that make more sense than this one.

Hogen, a Chinese Zen teacher, lived alone in a small temple in the country. One day four traveling monks appeared and asked if they might make a fire in his yard to warm themselves.

While they were building the fire, Hogen heard them arguing about subjectivity and objectivity. He joined them and said: "There is a big stone. Do you consider it to be inside or outside your mind?"

One of the monks replied: "From the Buddhist viewpoint everything is an objectification of mind, so I would say that the stone is inside my mind."

"Your head must feel very heavy," observed Hogen, "if you are carrying around a stone like that in your mind."

I'd just start chewing on the pole. Eventually I'd chew down far enough where I could jump safely.
