From The Titantic, The Empire State Building, The Golden Gate Bridge, Saturn V rockets, Mt. Everest, Supernovae, sperm whales, grizzly bears, tsunamis and tidal waves, Mt. St. Helens eruption to boobs, biceps, Big Gulps and Double Whoppers; we are as a race fascinated by size. The BIGGER the BETTER.
To what do you attribute this?

I disagree. Nanotechnology is on the rise and the real trend is to make everything smaller and consolidate.

So millions of people do NOT visit the Pyramids of Giza and the Grand Canyon every year to be impressed?
I wonder how this would work as a pick-up line: "Baby, I am hung like a carbon nanotube!"

Big monuments are awe inspiring but not very practical.
-------------------- Man is timid and apologetic; he is no longer upright; he dares not say "I think," "I am," but quotes some saint or sage. He is ashamed before the blade of grass or the blowing rose.Man postpones or remembers; he does not live in the present, but with reverted eye laments the past, or, heedless of the riches that surround him, stands on tiptoe to foresee the future. He cannot be happy and strong until he too lives with nature in the present, above time

Coincidentally, I was just channel surfing and stumbled upon the recent 'Godzilla' movie wherein the Big Lizard was wreaking havoc in NYC and the Chrysler Building tower was knocked over by missiles.
Proof of synchronicity?

In the case of Hummers and gigantic buildings I'm gonna guess - little boys making monuments to thier inflated egos?
In the case of boobs - little boys reminiscing about thier mother's milk filled providers?
In any case, silly machismo.

Oh, really? It is relegated to males? Me no think so.
The average American male is 5' 10", The average height requested on AOL female personal ads is 6' 3". That is realistic and has nothing to do with size.

There is a genetically proportional link of fertility to natural breast size. The attraction is forward-looking (reproduction) rather than backward-looking (memories - no puns here folks! ).

No, because breast size is also linked to the significant male's income. Not always, of course, but again there is a generalized correspondence. It is the case of Alpha Male (best provider) going after the Alpha Female (most genetically perfect, read: beautiful and proportioned).
Thus we loop back to true love vs. genetic attraction...

5'10" is good enough for me. But then I've never really understood the everything-must-be-gigantic obsession. It's kinda ridiculous.

is this a roundabout way to ask... something else?
A note to all those lining up for miles for a piece of me- if I play my cards right I will be unavailable quite shortly.
To answer your question, I usually prefer dating those that are around my height (5'6) or taller, but I'd go for someone shorter if they were otherwise totally awesome.

Ah, we finally get to the crux of the matter. First you say size does not matter, then you write otherwise. The man would have to be totally awesome if he were shorter, but less than totally awesome if he were taller (is the implied statement).
I rest my case.

Nah, I have exorbitantly high standards, so regardless of stature, those I date have to be utterly magnificent (in my eyes, anyhow.) For the record, I have indeed dated shorter men and found them quite physically attractive. Talking first glance, totally superficially, my height or taller tends to be a theme, and I'm not that tall so it doesn't leave all that many out. What can I say, I've absorbed some of the values of my culture.
