uTorrent now owned by BitTorrent Inc./MPAA?
    #7506675 - 10/10/07 07:08 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I guess BitTorrent Inc. bought uTorrent out a couple months back. What exactly does this mean for those using uTorrent, is it still safe?... I really don't want to drop uTorrent because it's such a great client but if it's not safe to use anymore then it looks like I'll be picking up an old version of it or Azureus.

I'm asking this because recently uTorrent was banned on one of the private trackers that I frequent. Their reasoning is:

Quote:

well...
perhaps you missed the several posts about it in the Site Info / Announcements section:
new client bans / accepted currently testing!
and:
uTorrent 1.7/1.7.1
it's also been mentioned in the FAQ:
Can I use any BT client, or is there a suggested list of white listed OKed clients to use?

as well as several mentions and discussions in the forums.

I was a firm supporter of utorrent right up to ver 1.6x but with the takeover of utorrent by (basically) the mpaa... well, 1,7 had issues where it didn't honestly report up / down stats, and their developers and supporters scoffed... at first, until the torrent community said FU so... 1.71 fixed that (reported all stats like every other torrent client

and wit the 1.7 tree came the strange reporting of "things we shouldn't worry about"... :hmmm:
f*ck that... sorry utorrent was a great client. but like everything good... it dies, time to move on.

besides... if for no other reason... THC will not support or alow a client owned by the mpaa...

if you think THC is the only site to be banning UT 1.7 and up... think again. most of the torrent sites out there are either banning it, or about to ban it. I've seen almost NO support in the torrent community for utorrent... even with many of them testing it to see if it's safe (conflicting reports).

the same thing happened to bitcomet... when it wouldn't support the private flag (for sites like us) ... BC was banned at most torrent sites... and their cocky attitudes melted and they decided to respect the private flag

this won't happen with utorrent.

I'm glad the people who made it in the first place made such a great client... and I'm glad they made money off selling that great client...

but we won't allow it here now that it is owned by the man...

cheers,
snuggs

Old versions should be fine, but I would avoid new versions at all costs. If I ran a private tracker, I would ban uTorrent clients as well.

If you want to see what kind of BS the RIAA/MPAA tries to get away with do a search for "media defender" and read all about their torrent tracker honeypot project.

I would recommend reading the wiki page at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaDefender, but somebody keeps removing all the damning (but true) text about how bad Media Defender's policies are, how they lie to the public, how they run ddos attacks against web sites that publish bad reviews about them, how they edit wiki to remove the damning evidence against them, etc...

What exactly would you be afraid of?

Surely if the client tried to phone home, it would be stupidly easy to detect.

> What exactly would you be afraid of?

Play any Sony cd's on your computer lately? Surely they wouldn't install spyware or anything malicious in the name of copy protection... the RIAA/MPAA are the low of low, right down there with the scum that send SPAM email... and I trust the two groups equally, which is not at all.

> Surely if the client tried to phone home, it would be stupidly easy to detect.

Not at all difficult to hide when the client is a network enabled app that talks with thousands of clients all across the world.

Phone home is only one issue... how about secretly record every torrent you transfer so that if they ever bust you, even if you have erased stuff, they still have a record of it.

I seem to remember the recording industry pushing for the right to remotely destroy a computer if they suspected it of having copyrighted material, no due process, and no court intervention... The prick in congress (Hatch?) was a big supporter until somebody pointed out that he had pirated software on his web server.... he changed his tune a bit after that.

Just google up: uTorrent bought by bittorrent

I guess this is old news. I wonder why certain private trackers are all up in arms about it recently. Must be something to do with the latest updates. I wish I had known about this a year ago, never would have updated past 1.6.1.

I know this news is years old and exactly that's why I want to bring it back up again because I'm reinstalling software on my fresh OS and was just about to install uTorrent again until I remembered about them being owned by a questionable corporation. What are you guys using right now?

I've used uTorrent ever since and never had a problem, partially given to the fact that I'm smart about it and deal only in the private spheres, yet I can't shake the feeling now that uTorrent being at v.3.1 is a sketchy piece of software and I'm considering alternatives, preferably open source, to continue peering.

Deluge looks interesting. I've been using Transmission (gtk) for a while, but I've been hankerin' for something new. Thanks for the tip.

Just run a 2.x version. I stopped upgrading at 2.3 I think. This is when they got bought out. I don't see anything in the newer versions worth having. Most if the so-called improvements revolve around better ways to spam uTorrent corporate advertising at you. The underlying torrent protocol hasn't changed.
