I found these walking down the road today in a well manicured lawn. I see them all the time and have always thought that they looked like actives. I am near Lake Ontario in NY. Please help me id them

prints will be checked when i get home from work in the morning.
I appreciate any help

looks like you've got some P subbs, with some Foes mixed in. Spore print, if they are black, you're good. (i bet you knew that, but i like feeling useful)

I've eaten foes to no ill effect, but there really is no reason TO eat them. And they aren't really documented as a food source, so i wouldn't really venture into that realm.
Just spore print the mushrooms you have there. Pluck off their caps, and put them down (gills facing downwards) and leave them a piece of white paper for a few hours, until you get a good solid color. If the color is brown/purple, they are Foes, but if the color is jet black, they are Subbs.
You dont have enough subbs to really get any psychoactive effects it doesnt look like, but if you can get more of those, and they indeed are subbs, you should be able to have some fun.
Only some Subbs bruise blue. A large majority of them don't. But if they do bruise blue, you can be pretty well assured that they are subbs, without having to spore print them.

I've seen quite a few subbs and never have seen any blue bruising. Maybe a slight bluish tint to the mycellium at the base, but nothing I would say is definitely blue.
I print them. If they're black, you've got subbs. If not, you don't. Pretty simple. No black spored mushroom is known to be toxic. The same can't be said for brown spored mushrooms.

All you have to do sir is print them....if they come out black....you are in the green zone. Also, I can easily spot some foes in that picture. But print them all just in case.

Thanx, it's a title of a Primus song that i like.
Anyway home from work and the prints have had about 10 hours so lets see.

Doesn't look too good maybe 2 or 3 are black. I cant tell if it is just a heavy deposit or black. What do you guys think?

Wow it is really hard to tell, here are a couple more pix, it might be easier to see.

On closer examination (without magnification) they might be mostly black.
is there a way to tell subbs and foes apart in the field?

Sorry about going on and on but I am excited to find out what these are. I think the prints are sorta black/purple, could they be Panaeolus castaneifolius?

What you have in the picture look like subbs. But prints will tell. After you've seen a lot of them you will be able to tell without printing all of them all the time. If you let them print long enough to become very saturated then you will have no doubt when they are black. Sometimes I like to look at mine with a loupe. If I put a piece of printer paper with some printing on it next to the prints I can see immediately if they are black. It will be as black as the toner on the paper. Sometimes if the mushrooms are wet they will leave a brown coloring from where the caps touch the paper but the spores themselves will be black.
What is the temperature around there right now? All of mine have slowed way down due to the cooler temps.

Sorry man, not subbs. If there is any question at all in your mind that they are not black then they most likely aren't P. subbs. Subbs are ULTRA black and you will def. know. The stems are too foeish looking as well.
If you think that we are wrong though you can eat them. I have eaten plenty of foes, they are actually not bad eating and they won't hurt you at all.
