For those of you who have trouble finding canning jars!

I posted this in another thread below but thought it might help others out
Forget the glasses,
I have a solution that involves a trip to the grocery store.
- They are stackable when not in use - They are reuseable - They are light weight - They can be pressure cooked
The are............
Ziplock snap and seal containers!! Buy the 1-cup size (they are almost the exact same size as half pint jars.
I have been using them for years. I ditched all my glass jars at one point because they are so bulky and you cant stack and store them. These you can stack right on top of eachother. They take up almost no room when not in use.
The holes are also easier to make in the lids becuase there plastic.
When I started doing grains did I buy glass jars? No! I bought bigger plastic containers. Thats all I use. My big ones hold about 2quarts each. I can fit 2 big ones at a time in my small presto pressure cooker, or 8 small ones.
Smaller containers I prefer ziplcok brand. Bigger containers I prefer the Gladware ones.
I have tried the generic store brand ones as well but find they dont hold up well in the PC and tend to warp.
If you start doing grains, I would recomend about 4-5 small pieces of electrical tape (which also holds up great in the PC) around the lid so when you shake it up the lid doesn fly off.

Yeah, thats the best part, they are everywhere. Any major chain grocery store should have them.
Even the tiny corners store a block from me has them.
I even used the same ones for years. They really hold up well.
The Gladware round ones (6-cups) are perfect for grains. I put a half inch hole in the middle and stuff it with polyfill. When I inject the spores I just slide the needle right through, or on the side of the polyfill.
I just had some multispore jars that I checked on 4 days after inoculation. They ended up being 95% colonized. I was so amazed. I have never had anything colonize that fast!
At first when I saw white everywhere I thought great, bad syinge I must have made. A close look and I was dumbfounded.
The small cup size ones double for spore prints.
I place a cap inside, wait till spores drop.
Then I take about 4 syringes that have been presteriled with water and inject all the water from all syringes inside and suck it back up one by one.

Regardless of whether his jar is contaminated or not, if his containers work it's great because most of us here probably already have them. I've got a whole cabinet full of those things

For those, who came to this thread hoping to find a way to easier locate the canning jars.
Plenty of cities actually having canning centers. I guess at these centers you can pay a small fee to use their cookers and what not. You just bring your jars/cans and some ingredients. Anyway, when I called up the Canning Center (the # was located on the city website), I asked where I could find the jars and the dude told me where he gets his and where else I could look. Supermarkets/walmart don't carry them around here but a local hardware/florist shop that has a bunch of locations carries them in mass quanity =)

Sorry, i have labeled you as a liar.
Actually, Yes I did.
You can believe whatever you want but
-popcorn tends to colonize fast (less surface area)
-I loaded about 3-4cc in Each jar (each probably had 1 1/2qt of pop.
-My syringes were 3 days old and very dark (some may argue but I find fresh syringes, made from fresh prints always germinate extremely fast, they tend to take off usually on day 3.
-I shook the hell out of my jars after inoculation (popcorn is also extremely easy to shake up to spread the spores around evenly
-it was also unusually warm in my place because of the weather for a few days.
I have never seen any jars colonize that fast in my life, but my usual time under those same conditions I will be at that point by day 7-8.
And NO it was not a contam. This was a few weeks ago and the spawn has already been spawned to coir which took its normal 8-10 days to colonize.

I think I'm gunna try this. I have been having trouble finding jars. I think I'll make like a tin foil cover over the top, like the first pf tek said to, just incase the seal isn't quite good. And does anyone have any idea if they'd warp if I sterilized them by steaming them in a pot?

I also call bullshit on that colonizing in 4 days. It takes 4 days to even see growth, so how it would be 95% after 4 days is beyond my stretch of the imagination.
In regards to the topic at hand:
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/9508876/fpart/1/vc/1
I am currently using the quarter pint version of those things, with my own twist on the lids. I cut the round center part of the lid out and siliconed some tyvek in place. I also nailed two holes on either side of the lid and made self healing silicone ports on those. It's working out great so far, I'm gonna try to break up some of the cakes that are still colonizing, we'll see how it goes.
Overall though, it was way more work than I felt was worth it. I definitely plan on using them again, but I'll probably make a small hole in the center and stuff it full of polyfil and inoculate through there, instead of the whole long process that I went through with the cutting and siliconing.
