I saw Ravi Shankar with Alla Rakha (the tabla drum guy in the video) about twenty five years ago at the Opera House of the National Arts Center in Ottawa Canada.
Amazing performance. The acoustics in the NAC Opera House are world-renowned, and justly so.
About twenty minutes into the show, he broke a string and had to stop for about ten minutes while he replaced it and retuned the sitar. The audience was very well-behaved and respectful during this unscheduled break, though. Almost dead silent, in fact.
They got a fairly lengthy standing ovation at the end. It really was quite a display of musicianship, though I can undertand it doesn't appeal to everyone. I only have one of his albums and I no longer listen to it all that often, but I always enjoy it when I do.
Those in the know insist that there are several better sitar players than Ravi Shankar, it's just that he is the most well known to Western audiences. On the other hand, these same people will tell you that Alla Rakha was (he died a few years back) the best tabla player out there.
I consider myself fortunate to have been able to see that show.

That's pretty cool. Sounds like a cool show. I'm sure that there are better sitar players out there. I only know of Ravi Shankar. Who's considered the best? I'm going to sleep. I'll read your reply tomorrow. Goodnight guys.

His tabla player does kick ass. I think his name is Zakir Hussain, and he formed the band Shakti with jazz guitarist John McGlaughlin in the 70s. Anyone correct me if I'm just making this up.
