Coir shouldn't be used for a casing, it should be used as a bulk substrate. A casing should be a non-nutritious substance, like petemoss/verm or "miracle grow moisture control". A casing only serves the purpose of providing a micro-climate, keeping the humidity right, etc. You don't want your casing to be fully colonized, though some of it will colonize.

Try it, what harm would it do to experiment.
Many peeps buy what is easily available over ideal, and still produce favorable results.

that is coco coir... eco earth, bead a beast and forest bed are all coco coir.
and yes, coir is a substrate material, not a casing material. calling coir a casing material is like calling horse manure a casing material in my opinion...
for casing you'll want peat moss and vermiculite. sifted, pH adjusted and buffered peat moss that is... and vermiculite.

would you say pete/verm is a better casing material than MGMC, mitch?

My foaf used Coco Fiber as a casing material and saw no ill-effects whatsoever, yields just as high as 50/50+.

I know it's fine to use the coir as a casing material. I'm going to be making a 70/30 Verm/coco coir mix. I'll put pics up later with the casing in place and let everyone know how it goes!

50/50+ is the commonly accepted formula.
Seems like almost any non-nutritious, airy, and not too dense of a substance will work.
In nature, the casing is dirt, sand, soil, grass, sticks, rocks, bugs etc...

Yes.
A properly made 50/50 casing with peat and verm is ideal. Pasteurized is ideal.
Sure, you can mix 30% coir with vermiculite and call it casing... You can mix 30% horse manure with vermiculite and call it casing as well. With similar results at that.
Casing layers aren't even needed for cubensis, they fruit without them just fine, which is basically what you're doing with your coir based "casing mixture." In reality it's an addition of another layer of substrate, not of casing. Once your coir or manure based "casing" colonizes, the substrate will then fruit without a casing, from it's fully colonized state. And yes, your yield will be just fine.

My casing layer is usually about 70/30 MGMC and verm, with the verm just there to fluff it up since the MGMC is thick like soil.
My myc. usually colonizes through most of the casing, which I think may be because the MGMC does have nutes (Ingredients say "some fertilizer"). Whether it's the best option or not, it works well for me and and the flushes on my cakes are much better than when I cased with plain verm.

K so i have a colonized mix, before putting it in a Perilite fruiting chamber should i dunk the casing? Iv also heard that a small layer of more Coir/verm mix can help during fruiting. I didnt sterilize in the microwave will this be a problem?
