how long do i have from when the veil breaks away from the stem until the cap drops its spores?
can you cut a cap off before the veil breaks and place in sterile conditions and still get a print out of it?

It depends on the strain, as if I recall correctly the spores of some strains mature faster than others.
Just torn veils give the most consistent results without having spores messing up everything

The veils dont take long to tear, as i found out on my first flush, from 1 inch pins to full grown shrooms, was around three days. I thought i had time before the veils broke on mine, and came back from work to find they had opened up.
Just try it anyway, u could probably get something for 1 syringe. If it doesnt work, then nothng lost. Eat the shroom!

the purple/black stuff was probably spores.
Those caps seem to be at the perfect time for printing. I always print when they open overnight. The ones that look about to open in the morning I pick because if not I get spores all over the place by the time I get back home

so could i have picked them last night if the veils hadnt broken away yet? would i still have gotten prints that early?
what is the big deal of the mushrooms dropping spores in your grow chamber? will it start to colonize the perlite?

The big deal is it makes a horrible mess and makes the mushrooms taste even worse.
For printing, wait until the cap begins to flatten out, and you'll see spores on the stipe above the veil remnants as well. I disagree with the technique of printing under a glass. I'd suggest laying a sheet of tyvek over the printing caps. All you want is to keep dust off and restrict drafts. A glass can tend to keep the caps too wet, and bacteria may bloom. RR

ah so just because there are spores on the stipe (id assume thats the skirt looking thing under the veil) doesnt mean it has dropped its spores yet?
and if the veil has torn away from the stem you still want to wait for the cap to flatten out a little??
also a little off subject. but are dark brown pins aborts also? or are just black pins? thanks guys

I let the cap flatten out while printing it because if not I get spores in my FC.

Lucky for you, mushrooms keep growing even after they're picked.
