basically it packs many files into one package and somewhat reduces their size so they are easier to send/store. with a program like WinRar or WinZip one can "unzip/unpack" them.

Just another compression format. It has a higher compression rate, but takes longer to compress and decompress.

it also makes me happy that the band will be getting the cash instead of the dipshit recording industry.

yeah that was a great way to go about managing the purchasing of this album in this digital age. finally a band that does something awesome like that and its a great album as well. i wish i could have done the same for that 40 dollar package with the album and the vinyls and all that stuff because that would have been sick to own, but thats too much for me to pay. im sure itd be worth it, but i dont even own a record player, and dont have the money right now.
but yeah as for the digital album, that was great having us name our own price. and maybe some other bands will follow in the footsteps and things will finally change to a more justifiable way of purchasing music in this day and age and the bullshit suing and crap like that may come to a halt. i doubt that it'll change much or that other bands will do that any time soon, but that would be pretty damn awesome and hopefully it will over time.

I think this album is phenomenal.
Best to be enjoyed with a fat and some good headphones.
Stellar production quality. This album has been getting almost exclusively ecstatic reviews from the press.
And what they did with the digital "pay what you want" release is pure genius. They probably made way more money doing this, and the album probably reached a lot more people, by circumventing the recording industry. I really hope that this is the wave of the future, at least for the more established artists who can afford to fund their own albums production.
The smaller bands will continue to be (almost exclusively) controlled by the production companies.
