i like conures and cockatiels too!!!! i don't think i could deal with a huge bird like a mcaw.
i have a cockatiel right now, his name is dibbi. he's kind of dumb, but he does strange and cute things so i like him.
i'd kind of like a crow someday, because they're big but not huge, and i've been told they're hella smart.
i'm worried i don't know what to do with my bird before he dies.
god willing, i've got another 10 years or so with him, but i can't imagine what its going to be like losing him. i wish he were smarter so i could ship him back to his homeland before his death (and not worry about him being eaten or starving)

I'm aware of the mess I'm about the get myself into and the commitment involved with an animal that has such a long lifespan. We have a room in the house that is devoted just to the birds. They spend almost the whole day out of their cages usually playing around on their 4 ft table with various structures on it. They get plenty of attention from us, especially my friend's conure and her macaw.
As for the bird I'm getting I plan to keep its wings. It's still young so we may clip them once before letting it be. The conure that is already here had its wings clipped when it was younger but is now a free-flight bird which looooooves tearing ass around the place.
I agree with the cage thing. Birds aren't meant to be kept in a cage and just looked at like some piece of curio on a bookshelf. They're social animals and need to be out and about and have human and bird interaction. However, they need a safe place to sleep and hide away when we're out, so cages are obviously a necessity.
Also, I disagree with dogs being a better companion than birds. Dogs are so much less intelligent than these birds. They can be so temperamental sometimes and usually get into shit no matter how hard you train them. I can definitely see having a bird as a long term companion as being much more rewarding than some dog.

We are taking in a blue and gold from somebody who can no longer keep her. It's going to be a little weird with two big birds in the house, but we're hoping they will get along well after a little adjusting. They're really interesting birds to watch and play with.
