Are push-ups counteractive to pull-ups/chin-ups?
    #7503315 - 10/09/07 10:04 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

It seems I've been able to do less since I've started doing push-upd, or maybe I've reached my threshold?

No, definitely not counteractive. You might not want to do them on the same day, maybe even spaced a couple days apart.
There's plenty plenty of other things that could affect it as well. For instance: your diet, energy levels based on your sleep, etc. etc.

While we're at it, do you do anything for your lower body? That's the most important part of your body to work out.

Do you do any other workouts without weights?

I've been curious about this as I've been trying to work out a lot lately, and I feel a little confined with only with 2 one hand bar-bells and 40 pounds worth of weight to go on them.

Im glad you asked being that I am an expert in this field.  Push ups develop different muscles but on the downward motion of your pushup your using your back muscles to slowly bring yourslef down otherwise you would slam into the ground.  doing a lot of pushups will work the back quite a bit.  The back is the primary muscle group involved in doing pull ups to increase reps do more pull ups than push ups because the chest is not involved in doing pull ups and slowly balance it out.

puahup= pectoralis minor/major the anterior deltoideus and traps also the triceps is activated

pullups= taget latissimus dorsi and teres major and (underhand grip) biceps brachii deltoideus posterior

i think thats it.

you can do them on the same day if u do a "full body" routine, no worries at all.

Yeah, it certainly isn't bad to do them both on the same day.
I just suggested he might want to do them on different days because he seemed unhappy that he was able to do less.

Because pushups don't really build mass (unless you're not able to do very many before reaching failure) I figured he wasn't really on a program and just wanted to be able to do as many as possible.

pushups dont build mass is actually wrong.

both high and low rep work activated hypertrophy, just different kinds of.
for example my uncle, he cant bench much and is much taller but does 200 pushups every day and got nice pecs !

how many PROPERLY exceuted pull ups can you do ?

doing them underhand, you fingertips facing you, you can build quite some biceps/lat mass using them.

once u manage to do more than 3x8 (which should take some time) you can start adding weight
by, for example, taking a full water bottle and fixing it to your belt.
great way to add resistance and therefor causing new growth stimuli.

Mix your grip up when you're doing pull-ups, too.  Try the underhand grip, overhand, split (one hand underhand, one overhand), parallel, etc.  Each grip will allow you to work different muscles.:mrt:

Do you mean like the fingertips facing toward you or angled toward you?

I think I'm doing them correctly...

Do you mean 3 sets of 8?

this is the grip i am referring to:

to get the best bank for your buck, get the top of your sternum to touch the bar when you
are looking over it and keep "leaning back" throughout the entire movement.

google "gironda chin" for instructions.

and yes, 3 sets of 8 are optimum.

another advice, alway go down to the "dead hang"

meaning, always allow your arms a FULL stretch at the bottom position and start from there up.
that'll active the most fibers possible each time and is a hell of a lot more difficult than having
the arms flexed at some angle and starting from there again.

I've been using the angled arm thing

I'll start using the dead hang and begin from scratch again
