How do I get a colonized spawn?
    #7503278 - 10/09/07 09:54 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Hey, I've got masses of fresh horse shit and I would really like to put it to some use. I read this in the faq about outdoor colonization:
#1 gather your colonized spawn
#2 gather your unpasteurized horse poo in a plastic bag
#3 over hydrate the poo in the plastic bag, (don't worry the poo will dry out on the ground) the plastic bag is mainly for transporting to a remote location.
#4 crumble a bottom layer of horse poo in a very shady area, (a circle or a line like a row will work) cover all the ground so it is a solid patty.
#5 shake & apply your spawn on top of the layer you just placed down,
#6 crumble more horse poo on top of the spawn to cover it like a casing layer to protect the spawn from contams & drying out.
#7 keep the patch well hydrated and wait for the harvest.

That all seems pretty good to me except the colonized spawn, I know this is a stupid question but does that mean I need to get the spores and inject them into a medium like rice cakes or bread? And can I use spore prints as a spawn? Because I saw some amanita's the other day, and I think they would be fun to grow. Oh, and also, can I get spore prints off of dried shrooms that a dealer would have, or would those be too far gone? Thanks, and I hope you could understand everything I was asking.

Sooo do i have to order the correct spores online somwhere? and then i can just inject them into something like the cracked corn subtrate?
I was reading about the cracked corn method
http://www.shroomery.org/9034/Cracked-Corn-Preparation-Technique
and if you read it, it says after half way "You could go right to the jar here... or" and then it starts talking about pressure cooking and stuff. does that mean i dont have to pressure cook the jars and all that? Sorry, im new to all this... but do you think i could put the mixture into a jar, add spores, and then the shrooms will start growing in a few days? i know that sounds too easy, please tell me what it is that im missing out on.

amanitas grow via mycorhizial symbiosis with a particular root source.
they do not grow as pans, or cubensis do..

spores from dry specimens can be used, if you know what you're doing, clearly you do not, What do you mean by "dealer"?

u can't use spore prints as spawn, but, u can use a print, to inoculate grains, and THAT will be your spawn medium.

I'll try and be simple.

Substrate is something that the mushroom can grow on. You inoculate (add spores) to substrate and mycelia (mushroom tissue) starts growing inside this substrate, feeding off it.

Spawn is fully colonized substrate, that is substrate that is fully covered with mycelia.

With that spawn you can do two things. Make it produce mushrooms, or break it up and add more substrate to it, which makes it start to grow again (you end up with more spawn)

So what you do with this outdoor tek is:

a) create a small amount of spawn using spores and a substrate

b) mix that spawn with the horsepoo and let it colonize

c) let it fruit

well actually spawn is not just colonized substrate. it's not spawn unless it's going to be used to colonize a larger amount of substrate.

besides that you won't have much use for fresh hpoo. you need aged hpoo or you can leach the fresh stuff you have. you need to read a lot of info. just start reading every tek on the main page then read as much of the archive stuff as you can. or get your hands on "the mushroom cultivator" by paul stamets. just consider it your new bible

I know that, but I was trying to be simple. It can be hard for someone new to this hobby to understand all the vocab. I know it was for me.

To the OP: The recomended book is great, and also try and read some of the cultivation teks in this same site

Most people start with spores, if that was the answer you were looking for.

Inoculate rye or wbs jars with spores, then spawn them to manure.

Thanks you guys, that helped alot. So does everyone get their spores offline? I mean, I can't see how else you'd get them. Does anyone have any sites they would recommend?
Sorry if I sound stupid, Im a long time mushroom lover but I'm just now trying to learn about cultivation.

many shroomery sponsors sell spores. Check the banners or at the shroomery sponsor links in the link section.
