The PF tek is by far the easiest and a must for a newbie cultivator. When you're comfortable with that then you can move on to casings. It's not as hard as some make it out to be and the returns are greater than standard cakes. When doing casings, I've been using birdseed and having good success. -Bruiser

Rye berries - In a filter patch bag - 10 days (average) till ready to spawn.
I have three casings going (waiting on second and third flushes) and have never fruited off pf cakes (and probably never will).
I have some pf jars growing spawn for some of my next casings, but they're VERY slow compared to rye.
Just my 2 cents.

I'm sure what you mean is that you spawn compost, and case with coir or peat/lime. ?You should do more reading as you go on this wild ride...
Have fun with it! ?I am!

One more thing... Birdseed is extremely difficult to get the right moisture content with. ?Wait on that 'til you get a good handle on rye. (if you succeed with rye you won't need birdseed anyway, although it usually works as well if not better)

My cat hasn't had any trouble with birdseed (mostly millet, very few sunflowers). Anything between 100ml seed and 100ml water to 200ml seed and 150ml water has produced just fine.
He uses an autoclave at 15psi for anywhere from 50-90 min, and hasn't had any contaminations yet (about 50 jars)....
Maybe it's a function of the kind of seed you use, but the little furball has had great success without too much attention to water content. YMMV.
