9-5 poker

My next day off, I am going to play poker for 8 hours as if it is my job and see how much I can make. Im not thinking about quitting my job, but it would make me feel better to know just how well I could financially support myself if I ever lost my job. and who knows, If I surprise myself and make over 300 bucks I will seriously give some thought to doing it for a living.
I have recently picked poker back up again and gotten into a really good rhythm and I have placed first in the last 6 tournaments I have won.... granted they were 6-10 dollar 10 man tourneys, but that right there is about 200 bucks in a little under 4 hours of my time.
I dont know how good I would be at it, but I could play as many tournaments at one time as I want if I needed to speed up the process.

you really need to play poker for 8 hours a day for a month to see if you can play it for a living. One day is not a good enough sample size. even the best players in the world have losing days, weeks, months even a year.

yeah, but they are usually playing the best. I am playing lots of low level tournaments and eating the fish and kicking the donkeys.
the pro's are playing either big money cash games, or tournaments with shit tons of people. I have a system, and it has been working flawlessly. I just want to see that if I sit there for 8 hours, how much I will make. As it stands right now, I seriously doubt there is any 8 hour session of playing 10 dollar 10 man tourneys where I would lose money. in the last 15 low level tournaments I have played, i have at the very least placed.

and they are completely on top of their game most of the time. shit doyle brunson and johnny chan never made it every time - to make it twice in a row in the wsop is fucking unbelievable - like lightning struck twice.
watch rounders a few times - good idea of what pulling fish really looks like.
good luck!

Don't go into tournaments with a "how much money can I make" mindset - it'll send you on tilt in a fucking instant - and anyone with half a brain will see that and shit on you in your worst moment

I've been playing online poker for a living for 4 years now making about 20k a year (borderline living). And yes there is a damn good chance you will lose playing 10$ SNGS all day. Hell i've come 29th in a wpt tournament and then lost 20 4$ tournies in a row.

i am so-so on the 300+ person tourneys. I even got 9th once in a 1200 person tourney..... but like I said, i have a system, and it has worked flawlessly for long enough that there cannot be that much of a margin of error.
maybe you are right though... that is why I am doing this... just to see how well my system holds up. I have watched people get 3rd place in 10 man tourneys from not even playing, just waiting until everyone else gets out. basically, i dont play anything but killer hands until 2-3 people have gotten out, which is usually pretty quick. that usually clears the room of the uber-fish and then it is quite easy to play the people who dont go all in preflop with Q 4 suited and 6 people called. Ans those people are pretty easy to read even on the computer. For example, when I have KJ, you raise to a level to get the people with 6 3 and such to fold, then you have a pretty good pin on anyone that has the A, or you can work it the other way around with a low pair or if you are feeling risky like a 56.... you can basically split the table up with these people into groups of high cards and low cards.... not really good hands and bad hands, because that is subjective, but I can usually tell when they have a Q or higher.
I hope I dont come of as bragging... because I know I am at best, a mediocre poker player, but you cant shun the statistics I have. Over the course of this last week I have made about 300.... and that is just playing a few games when I get off work.

you are not coming off as bragging at all, but you're coming off as a beginner I am just trying to give you information and hints about this game from a professional online player. I shared similar thoughts to you when I first started playing. What will happen to your system when you have a pair of 9's and the flop comes 567 you bet and get raised all in, do you call hoping your 9's are good, do you call hoping you catch an 8. and what will happen to your mental game when you are all in with AA on the bubble vs AK and AK spikes a straight or trips on the river....

there are two rules I live by in poker:
1) dont play your hand, play their hands
2) dont go all in unless you know you are going to win or if you know you are going to lose (being close to being blinded out is the exception).
of course, rule 2 is flexible for when needed, but as long as I stick to it for the msot part, i will do good.

isn't online poker illegal [ i mean, because the douchebags couldn't tax it]? i used to play pokerstars and a few other sites and made a little cash until one day [a year ago or so] the website came up with a prompt saying i couldn't play for real cash anymore.

some sites shut down because the law was ambiguous.
I used to think the same thing until about a month ago. I played for about a year before they got semi-shutdown and thought it was over for US citizens.
island tripper: I play on bodog with this name. I used to play on Pokerroom.com with the name Kurzweil2032 or something like that. I know you have been playing much longer than me, and are probably way better, but Im telling you I have been tearing ass on 6$ turbo's and atleast placing in every 10$ tourney I play.

im kind of glad they temporarily cut me off from online poker - that shit seems so stupid. i win by taking cues, reading body language and tells, etc. i can't tell what the fuck people have or get any read on them when all i know is how fast they click and what they did.

Good luck to you dude. Hope you are able to make some decent scratch on your next day off.
I stick mostly to low level blinds and tourneys making a little here and there and play for fun mostly. I may step it up a notch sooner or later but for now I'm having fun doing what I'm doing.
