Gymnopilus spectabilis (Gyms)

I understand that I may find these in my area. I have read that the east coast variety is active and that they like rotting tree stumps. My question is about strength/dose/and ID
As far as ID-ing them goes, am i correct to assume that those that bruise blue/blue-green are the active ones? What color are the spores?
Strength is a question because i read that they are about 1/8 - 1/10 as strong as the standard "shroom"
Dose... How many, should i dry them and make a tea (they are supposed to be very bitter)???

me if you have questions about lasers Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles. FeelFamily resident tech guru

yes, coon will probably chime in here sooner or later, he's fond of gyms and being from ohio, is familiar with the east coast forms.
dosage is on the order of a few to several grams dried. there is no pleasant way to eat them imo and they can be aweful, but nothing like peyote, so it comes down to how badly you want to get them down or how seriously you take it.
there is speculation that more of the eastern populations are active than in the west, but many of ours are active aswell and it's not understood what factors contribute to activity.
before you go eating gyms, they are not as straightforward a genus as you might think and require study. it is fair enough to say that of the known gyms, once you have confirmed that your find belongs to the genus Gymnopilus, you can assume that they are active, however, this genus at large does not have a long history of safe consumption, so if you where going to play with them, use caution and stick with those you can identify reasonably to species. not even all G. junonius eaten by members here are actualy confirmed to belong in that species.
that said, as long as you know the risks of mushroom identification and the risks of say, eating a food/medicine not known conclusively to be completely safe, Gyms aren't that scary.

you're much better off with Pan. subbalteatus imo. gives you plenty of time to prepare aswell.
rather than just pick everything you see, how about researching these two species?
if you insist on doing so anyway, be sure to keep all collections separated and make a detailed description for each before you even think of posting a bunch of id requests
