Dang! I missed all the good uploads, anyone want to upload the Isis and Windmills by the Ocean again?
Not sure if these qualify as "Avant Garde" but Subterranean Masquerade and Agalloch are great bands.

I can't keep up with all the new music so I appreciate the recommendations.

Zozobra is Caleb Scofield (Cave In, Old Man Gloom) and Santos Montano (Forensics, Old Man Gloom). Debut album ‘Harmonic Tremors’ was released on Hydra Head in January 2007. The follow up record ‘Bird of Prey’ is scheduled to be released through Hydra Head on August 5th, 2008. The new record features Aaron Harris, of Isis, on the drums. Aaron also engineered and mixed the record.

Isis started it all for me. Listening to them introduced me to the vast amount of quality rock/metal that is being produced all over the world. Now I only got to see one of these bands live someday!

I fucking totally dug and I mean totally the Sunn-o, Bardo Pond and Giant Squids, not to mention Buckethead. They're sick. Haha, heard someone mention John Zorn and Naked City. That album is really bent. This is certainly one of those 'best threads ever.' I would five star everybody.

An eight handed band rocking from North Carolina. I love the atmospheric instrumentals. A must have for any fan of the genre. Enjoy!

You can't pigeonhole these bands into tidy genres, but I think they will appeal to fans of avant garde metal in general. Check out:
Russian Circles
Canvas Solaris
Red Sparowes
Behold... the Arctopus
Gordian Knot

Seriously, I've been WAY into Isis for years now. At first I wasn't really diggin' the Remix album, but once I came around it blew my mind.

hello ppl,
i've been away from metal scene for quite a long time now (4-5 years). right now i'm into psy music (from psytrance to ambient, dark ambient, post-rock, ...) i need some recommendation for good (trippy) doom metal (from past 4-5 years)
some of my favorites (back in the day): green carnation, summoning, in the woods..., tiamat, decoryah, my dying bride, (some) katatonia,...
i'm not really fond of extreme vocals (in fact that might be the reason i turned to psychedelic rock), so i was wondering if you guyz could recommend me some good metal.
metal is like coffee and/or chocolate !!! the darker, the better
