Water proof particle board?

This might sound a bit off forum, but I need to make some particle boards water proof. Anyone got any suggestions on how to accomplish this?
I have one of these
and I'm going to convert two of the shelfs into fruiting chambers. However, I'll need to make the wood in these shelfs water proof. One way would be to put plexi glass on each side, but that would end up beeing about 2m^2 of plexi glass - which isn't cheap. So I figured I could probably do this in some other way. I've got some silicone for the edges, but that will probably not stick very good to the surfaces and it would most likely be a bad idea to try to cover the whole surface with this.
So all you wood workers out there, help me out!

I could not possibly think of a more contaminate prone solution. Seriously, that is a horrible idea. I'm sorry, don't mean to crap on your idea but particle board is a _substrate_ and the minute it gets any direct contact with the humidity it will start growing.

The idea was to avoid letting it get any contact with humidity though, by coating it in something. I would pump the humid air out from the shelf and outside the room. I was thinking that I could maybe use those plastic floors to cover it. You don't think this is enough - will there be contaminations even though it's all covered? If that is the case I should probably move my shotgun box out of that shelf asap(?)
Thanks for your input!

The only thing that might even come close to working would be a rubberized paint that will totally create an impenetratable barrier. But as the others said, its a cluster f**k waiting to happen as far as sterility, and absorbtion of water vapor goes. Find something else bro.

Marine paint will work, but why spend all that money when you can use plastic sheeting for a tiny fraction of the cost? RR

Just go to home depot and get 2 or 3 mil clear sheeting like for painting and staple it to the board, covering the staples in some sort of caulk.
