Wtf? No canning jars anywhere
    #7501923 - 10/09/07 03:36 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Target, Walmart, Kmart, they're ALL out of canning jars because everyone is canning vegetables right now. Gahh!!!! Not to mention it's hard to find a decent pressure cooker in any store. >:(

I agree internet is where to go. If you dont have patience how can you wait for that first flush? Unless of course you already have what you need(accept for a pc and jars of course) in wich case I would be pissed to.

patience is key in this hobby but I felt the same when I ordered a lot of shit online for my first grow last year
I bought a cheapo presto PC that will hold 3 quarts or 6 pint jars
kind of a bitch but it does the job and I'm too poor to get a better one

good luck

It's not that I don't have patience, it's more like this needs to get started within a certain time frame. Buying JARS over the net seems so lame. Sigh. Will check ace hardware tomorrow.

Try Value village and other thrift stores. I've been in the cheap furniture market and been hitting up the local thrift shops lately and I always see a tone of canning jars, and they are dirt cheap!

Glasses with two pieces of foil work.

Take top piece off and pierce to inject. Once pierced, place second piece back on and crumple both fairly well. Gas exchange will occur and I've never had any problems with this method.

Splendid, I found the tek

no walmarts carry it right now, i suppose i could have them ship it but that'd be 5-7 days away. that may have to do but it's just like damn, you'd think they'd be easier to find. NOBODY has em in stock.

Forget the glasses,

I have a solution that involves a trip to the grocery store.

- They are stackable when not in use
- They are reuseable
- They are light weight
- They can be pressure cooked

The are............

Ziplock snap and seal containers!!
Buy the 1-cup size (they are almost the exact same size as half pint jars.

I have been using them for years. I ditched all my glass jars at one point because they are so bulky and you cant stack and store them. These you can stack right on top of eachother. They take up almost no room when not in use.

The holes are also easier to make in the lids becuase there plastic.

When I started doing grains did I buy glass jars? No! I bought bigger (ziplock snap and seal) containers. Thats all I use. My big ones hold about 2quarts each. I can fit 2 big ones at a time in my small presto pressure cooker, or 8 small ones.

If you start doing grains, I would recomend about 4-5 small pieces of electrical tape (which also holds up great in the PC) around the lid so when you shake it up the lid doesn fly off.

I've been trying to come up with something aside from canning jars to use too just because I don't have any and I'd rather use something I have around the house instead.  And I have those Ziplock things you speak of.  But...how would you sterilize without them melting?  Maybe that's a stupid question but it seems like that could...?  I don't have a pressure cooker, I will be boiling water and steaming them in there, would that cause any type of problem?

They melt at a higher temp than PCing. On the bottom in the middle of the recycle symbol there is a number. Typically if it can be microwaved, it can be PCed. I don't think you will have a problem. It's worth a try.
