It occurs to me that the events we "allow" ourselves to become truly excited and enthusiastic about compose roughly 1% of our total lifetime. The other 99% of our life, we are just existing--doing laundry, working, studying, eating meals, showering, sleeping, and so on. Few (if any) of us manage to be excited and enthusiastic about these normal activities.
Yet the consequences of "saving" ourselves for that 1% of life seem dire. The life of quiet desperation which Thoreau observed is created day by day, as we spend more time existing, and less time LIVING. Nothing is really wrong, but nothing is really right, either. It's all medium, tepid, beige and Tuesday.
Sometimes, not all the time, but more often than not, I actually catch myself painting my experiences beige. When I awaken into that moment, notice the habit, cease the description--suddenly life is technicolor again.
If the majority of our experiences are what would generally be called mundane, perhaps the solution is to re-frame and re-value mundanity?

I have definitely noticed this in myself. It's old negative though loops that keep coloring things in Gray. This morning I didn't fall for it. I walked your boy to school and then went to the dog park and let my dog run. It all seemed fresh as the fall morning breeze. On another day I wouldn't have bothered to look.

I have experienced this before, but I do it very little now. I don't give myself the time or self pity. I use enthusiasm for life as motivation to accomplish my goals. I try to being total enthusiasm to my job, my hobbies (which are many), my relationships with others, and my relationship to myself. I integrate my life to achieve this. My marriage is in a very high state of repair that I bring my passion for life to daily and hourly. My job is also one of my primary interests as a hobby and I am totally focused and positive in the execution of it. My nonpaying hobbies hold my interest as well to the point that my enthusiasm for those subjects infects others around me quite often. All of these things are important aspects of my spiritual path which is the primary source of my focus and passion which therefore feeds back out into everything I do...like the blood running in my veins it feeds my life. I see my motivation feeding back from others every day, and this just drives me on.

Quit whining and get a life.

I think that only applies to normal people. Those of us who expand our minds take that 1% to about 15%. That is why I take the journey.

Someone has to break up the pity party.

I am currently running about %80 on all four barrels. I don't need drugs to do it, but I do like them.

I woke up early and ran 6 miles today. The last mile I pushed it as hard as I could. It is a perfectly clear and slightly cool morning. Today I am swearing off fear for another day, and I am excited about what lies ahead. what ever it is I am 100% motivated to meet it head on.
The reason for the 1%, by the way, is fear. When we indulge our patterns we are seeking comfort. When we seek comfort it is because we seek the familiar. We fear change and we try to remain static through patterns. However, this stasis kills our enthusiasm for life. The more we challenge these patterns the more enthusiasm for life we have because we are acknowledging it's true nature...change.

I suggest wearing a dress and lipstick to work. That should challenge your patterns.

Indeed! I call this process ossification, as in the transformation of that which is flexible into that which is rigid. While the rigidity can feel safe and secure, it results in a loss of both resilience and sensation. (*sigh* No penis jokes, please.)
