very weird day on the computer
    #7500381 - 10/09/07 03:13 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

so i got 2 onboard(asus) ethernets ports.

1 of them "never" works(nvidia), other works perfect.

so im screwing around with my xbox and i plug it into my nvidia. somehow i manage to make a connection, and this connection worked VERY well for about 10 mins.

then i shut everything down and boom its not working anymore, and i never got it working again(i spent about 5 hours).

then i pull a ethernet card(linksys this time) out of another computer....it doesn't work either. and they won't even connect to the internet.

i don't get it, ethernet has been around for a long time, how is it they fail to make them work in this day and age.

what version of windows are you running, if its vista i have had nothing but trouble with ehternet, took me 3 days to get it working with my wireless router via the ethernet.

U may need to get updated drivers for the nvidia for vista

Is yours one of the ASUS/nVidia boards that have the built in buggy firewall crap that doesn't work, cannot be turned off, and everybody hates?

I remember reading about those boards a while back. I'd just stick with the other one. (it's a gigabit right?)

its a asus 939 sli premium, i recall some wierd program firewall or network thing popping up a long time ago but i havn't seen it since.

so im not sure if this is one of them boards or not

as for drivers, i went to nvidia and installed the latest "nforce 4" drivers, but before i did so i uninstalled the network card in device manager.

after installing the software they were still yellow so its like the drivers didn't install. windows ended up finding some however.

im about to try a 3com network card i found, this one cost me about $60+ back when i bought it so if this thing doesn't work im gunna be pissed.

ok so this other network card didn't work either.

yes this is the faggot board with the nvfirewall on it.

But, get this, i go to try to install the "NAM" aka network access manager and it says its not availble on this system.

so...what i think happened is i uninstalled it way back in the day...but the settings it had are stuck and still working on my system.

I need to install it again but it appears i can't?

Yeah I have one of those. DO NOT INSTALL THE NVIDIA FIREWALL!!!

It will fuck you up!!! Don't do it!

I don't remember what I did but I fixed it. I think I uninstalled windows or something like that to get my other ethernet port working.

yah well i installed it way back in the day and i forgot about it.

so yah i uninstalled it, then reinstalled the newest version along with newest version drivers for everything.

i opened the firewall and turned everything off and now i just uninstalled it....didn't work.

also, the 3com ethernet i put in is now going...connected-unconnected off and on....so i dunno wtf that means maybe all my ethernets went bad? or maybe its the cord im using.

anyways if anyone knows how to get rid of the nvfirewall / armor "completely" off my system that would be great. Ive been doing googles but not much luck.

brand new cables, not much improvement.

i did find a handly little program in bios that tests my cable lines

their are 4 pairs of wires in each cable, it tests each pair.

possible results are (open, normal, short)  then it gives a number

here are the results

(good ethernet port)Lan1

1-2    normal    n/a
3-4    normal    n/a
5-6    short    1.6M
7-8    short    1.6M

(bad ethernet port) lan2

1-2  (open,normal,short)  n/a
3-4  normal              n/a
5-6  short                1.6 to 4.0 M
7-8  (short,open)        1.6- n/a

now when i put my new cord in their it fixed all that, so that it matched the good port

I have no idea what this data means however.

i then enabled some kind of post lan cable checker?  and now when i boot it tells me to check my lan cables...however it tells me it on both ports which is interesting.

edit: also something else to note, the 3com pci ethernet i put in to test is still not working, however earlier i mentioned it keeps popping in and out of "aquairing network address" and "no connection"....i let it do this for a few minutes and then every time it would try to make a connection my cpu usage would JUMP to 100%....i let this happen for about 5 mins and then my computer completly froze

something is really fucked up with my computer plz help me :emocry:

> I have no idea what this data means however.

There are eight wires in the ethernet cable and the run in (twisted) pairs.  If the cable gets crimped or damaged, the pairs can short out, and your network stops working.

Something like: "5-6 short 1.6M" would tell me that wires 5 and 6 are shorted out at 1.6 meters (~5'4") from the plug, assuming I am reading it correctly.

Open would mean that one of the wires in the cable is broken or not connected.  Short would mean that two of the wires in the cable are touching each other.  Depending upon the type of ethernet (10, 100, or 1000 mbps), you may or may not need all pairs to be working.

nope wasn't the cords or the ethernet ports, my isp locked my ip address with my mac address on my ethernet card, so that when i switched the cable the other card wouldn't work.

the fix was to turn the power off on my cable box and wait a minute. when turned back on it gives me a new ip address, however i can only switch ip's so many times.

however the reason it wouldn't work with my xbox was an unrelated reason.

Oh, I was just explaining what I think the output from the diag meant, not speaking towards your problem. However, based on what you just said, I would buy a cheap router and drop that in between my equipment and the cable box... that way the cable box will always see the mac of your router no matter how much you change things around on your local area network.

i put new cables in and it still said short so thats weird. Its also weird that lines 1-4 are open, so i dunno maybe my program is just stupid.
