Half Gallon Rye Grain jars not colonizing correctly..what am I doing wrong?

Hey I have casings going and my half pint jars have been nothing but good to me. On a hunch I tried with the Half Gallon mason jars to see if I could increase the rye grain yield. Everything was great. I colonized one half gallon rye grain jar and everything was going good. Let me first say that I think I may have used too much water because the grains didnt shake loosely like with my other jars after I PC'd it. The grain was kind of clumpy but i could still shake it loose. After colonizing things were going smooth (shaked a couple times) and then out of nowhere the growth seemed to stop and was just concentrated in big rye chunks which turned solid white but didnt spread outsied of these chunks and didnt look like the normal ropy fuzzy kind of growth. I broke a couple open and they were solid white pretty much with rye sprinkied about. Wierd ?!? I tossed everything because it didnt look normal.
Has anyone seen this before and was too much moisture my problem? My moisture level I think was alot higher because I soaked these grains for 24 hours which is something I haven't done before and then used my usual water levels before PC'ing which is 180 ml water for 250 ml rye.
How much water should I be using after soaking and rinsing 500 ml of rye to PC with? I used 360 ml in my failed project.
PS. Done with Agar...LC baby bottle tek is coming soon

Hey Dude,I've had the same problem and what I think it was, was in combination w\ not being allowed to get a hold back after being shaken, was insufficient air exchange.

Half gallon jars often go anaerobic in the centers. It's also harder for the CO2 to escape the larger jars. Personally, I don't use anything larger than quarts, even though I have five or six cases of half gallon jars in storage. Try leaving the jars laying on their sides. Next grow, I'd suggest quarts for grains.
In addition, the larger the container, the drier you make the grains. You'll use about 20% less water(per measure of grain) with half gallons than you'd use with quarts. RR

KCizzle,
It sounds like you normally neither soak nor simmer and use the method of simply adding grain and water to the jar and cooking.
The 24 hour soak method (with or without simmering) is a replacement for the adding water to the jar method. If you are soaking your rye for 24 hours (submerged) you shouldn't be adding any more water at the time of cooking.
If I've read correctly, too much water was probably your problem

God bless this wonderful board. I got everything answered and more.
Andrew47 you are correct about that I previously never soaked or simmered. That makes sense now that you would not need to add water after soaking. I wasn't sure if enough water soaks in in just a 24 hour period b/c the grain looked the same size but was just a little wet and darker.

Some people, myself included, simmer the grains a little to make sure that they did take on enough water. In theory, the soak should be enough

My foaf experienced that same thing when he first tried RBs, he said that nearly all of his worst jars, in terms of too much water and excessive clumping, did eventually colonize, and fruited prolifically!
Put them in a closet and forget about them for a month.
Then take them out when fully colonized and use them for G2G transfers, works great, so says my foaf.

how dry is to dry. i use the rr method outlined in the dvds the only difference is i move the grains around while in my collinder so the surfaces steam dry pretty evenly. i use myco bags and half gallon jars for collinzation. I innoc with LC and i see growth between day 3 and 4. I tend to stay on the dry side and was wondering if you could describe what rye would look like if it were too dry to use. i use a heating pad @ 84 degrees under my jars to help with humidity inside the jars. the surface is in the mid 70s. i use a digital thermometer to make sure the myc never gets over 80 degrees. i must add that using the rr method tends to be quite a bit dryer than the other teks.
