Allergies to oyster shells in casing?
    #7499544 - 10/08/07 09:14 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

Does anyone know if a person who is allergic to shellfish (i.e. oysters) could possibly have a reaction to crushed oyster shells used in a casing (if they ate something that grew from it that is). If the possibility of reaction does exist is there an alternative that would serve the same purpose as well as the shells? Thanks alot for the help.

I'd think you would be fine as the mushrooms aren't absorbing anything from the shells, it's just a casing. That being said, why risk it.

It's not a risk. The shells are calcium carbonate. Shellfish allergy is related to the meat part, not the shell part.
