I took out the cake and scraped out the contamination as best I could, which dug pretty deep into the cake. I also scraped off the greyish stuff on the sides of the cake, it looks nice and pretty now, but I'm wondering if I shouldn't let myself be fooled and toss it anyway.
You just spread spores from that contamination all over the place by digging at it. And if it is inside the cake as bad as you say, those shrooms are definitly affected by it. Your crazy to keep those. DO NOT EAT.

the spores from the contam will definitly be on the shrooms. You wont be able to see them and depending on what it is, it could give you serious food poisoning. Do not eat. Throw it out!
guess it depends on how severe it is. i've ingested shrooms from cakes that had started showing signs of green before they were fully matured with no negative effects. If it's deep into the cake as bad as he says..then i wouldn't try it. Was probably contamed from the start if it's that bad.

most green molds are not harmful to humans. That shit on that cake was not green. It looks nasty, why would you chance it?

Ignore that last one... I kept scraping and scraping, and it goes sooo deep, so I heated up a knife and sliced it to bits and this is what i see:

soooo i think it should be just white on the inside of a cake, not little dark margerine looking things???
so the only question that remains is whether i can eat the very healthy looking ones that grew out of it.
EDIT: QUESTION ANSWERED, thanks guys
I hope I didn't inhale too many of those spores :\ I'll let you know if I come down with any symptoms. As for those shrooms, I'll toss em.

Sorry to drag this on, RR responded in my Contam thread on it with:
"Yea, I'd toss it. That's mold. The fruits will be ok once dry. If the weather is suitable outdoors, you might try to let it finish up there. If not, pick the small fruits and toss it."
I'm throwing out the cake, that parts done, and I guess I'll throw out the ones that were attached to it now that they were rubbed with this stuff.... but there are some in the dehydrator that were picked from the top of the cake, nowhere near the infection, before i even decided to investigate this matter, let alone pick at it. can i keep those or should i reach into the dehydrator and toss them? they look pretty good....

Also... if someone has any inkling as to what that contamination was (...and maybe how harmful it is to inhale??)

When I have situations like that I usually save the good looking shrooms from a cake like that and use them for a grain alcohol extraction. I figure that this will kill any spores that may have floated onto them.
And that cake definetly applies to this. Pull the fruits that are untouched, and discard A.S.A.P.!
Any second opinions on my alcohol tincture theory?

Wow Agave that is interesting. Kinda noob here. Do you have a link on the grain alcohol extraction process?

There is a very definite change in how a fruit is when the contamination begins to effect it. Granted, that might not be uniform but I've never seen any proof that a contaminant can infiltrate the network and have the fruit still go about its business as if it is not infected with something. Generally the fruit will rot, and quickly at that. IE, its pretty obvious when you can no longer consider a fruit safe.
Understandably many are lax to be supportive of eating it and I just offer this point of view so that you have a bit of a grasp of what is probably true (along with what is wisely precautionary)
Assuming you have plenty of stuff I see no reason to risk things and eat it.
