I have mice!

Today I came back to the garage I'm staying in at my dad's house, and as we speak there are at least two little mice running around all over the place. I've actually known about them for while now. They seem to be a lot more curious and more bold to come around me than before. I wonder if they are trying to scavenge enough food for winter.
The other day I found a bag of breakfast oaks with a hole..
and just as I was typing that that a mouse crawled right into the bag of rice sitting on top of a dresser I use to prepare food. I grabbed it inside the bag and closed the bag on it and I went outside to let it out. I try to let it out and I think it got away really fast and then the rice poured out too. I picked up rice and put it back in the bag. I'm going to have to rinse it off before I eat it.
I won't kill the mice, I just won't. I think I'm going to get a live mouse trap and take them some where away from here and let them out, but I wonder if they will freeze or starve.
I would let them stay here but they'll pee and poop everywhere and eat my food and I could get sick. I guess having mice is just the consequence of being dirt poor and living in an old wooden broke down garage.
I feel really sorry for them and they're actually really endearing if you think about it.
Has anyone ever had experiences with live mouse traps? This is frustrating.

I remember having a problem with a mouse when I was a child. My mother tried those live traps for sometime with no luck, the little bugger kept getting the food out of the trap.
It fell into the toilet one night though and I discovered it swimming endlessly around the bowl the next morning.
Maybe you should bait your toilet? Personally I would just kill them.

I hear rats in my apartment walls, but so far they haven't gotten into my unit.
these apartments were recently redone with new sheet rock and cabinets, so I guess the rats haven't chewed a hole into my unit yet.
I kind of can't wait until one finds its way in here, my cat is vicious and will make short work of it.

The only way you can avoid bosses and jobs is if you don't care about making a living. Which leads to the second freedom: the freedom to starve." - Tom Morello

If you dont kill them...you probably wont get rid of them. There's plenty of mice in the world...i don't think you'll hurt the population by ridding a few from your living quarters.

Yeah it's pretty cold right now. And in the summer time it gets really hot. It's terrible, but that's my living situation right now. It's not even part of the house, it's like off to the side, like an old rickety storage space/garage. I have a heater though, so that helps alot.
If I don't have any other options then I would probably put it down somehow, but I feel cats and rat traps and poison are totally inhumane. Some people might scoff at that because it's something people are used to/don't care, but I do. They're small little creatures, but creatures nonetheless.
Besides, it's not that hard to catch mice. I mean, if you can catch one in a mouse trap I don't see why you couldn't think of something to catch it and safely put it in the woods somewhere with a bag of oats and it would be happy hopefully. I just don't like seeing creatures die like that.
I thought of something. I'm going to use one of those tent bags, the long kind, and put a cardboard tube in it,and put some oats in the end. then when the mouse goes in, I can just snatch it up and throw it in he plastic box I have ready and take it out somewhere in the woods when I catch them all.
