Hey guys. Anyone that knows about any of the PropellarHead Reason programs can probably answer this. Do I NEED a Midi Controller For it. I know in Fruity Loops u can use your Computer Keyboard to Control The Beats/melodies. Or Can u just use a Piano Roll Like fruity Loops. Thanks Everyone

You can do both.
Use your keyboard as a midi input (I think you have to manually map it though), or just use your mouse to draw the notes in.
reason is great because it's so incredibly user friendly, but a very powerful program at the same time.

reason in my opinion is far from user friendly. it has it uses but it's sequencer is just fucking garbage compared to any other decent music production program.

Yeah, Reason's sequencer sucks IMO, it's best used slaved to Cubase, Logic or Digital Performer.

lies
reason is like "fischer price my first sequencer". hella easy to learn, but it's powerful as fuck. i've been using it since 1.5 and it has always been so easy to plaster out ideas quick as fuck and move on.
not to mention the extremely easy ability to load up breaks youve sliced in recycle and do really sick sick sick drum programming in a matter of seconds.
i've written plenty of shit in reason and people have said "wtf? you wrote that in reason???" i suppose it's not about what program ya use, it's how bangin' it sounds when you export a wav file.

i was refering to cutting up breaks in recycle and loading them into dr rex. you dont load up rex files in redrum, man. talkin about dr rex. set the cut points in recycle, takes two seconds, save file as rex, load it up in dr. rex, BANG, instant crazy break programming. so simple.
you can also do sick drum programming with single hits in redrum. ONLY RETARDS USE THE STEP SEQUENCER!
i have some close friends who are signed to labels like moving shadow and renegade hardware's sister label barcode send .rns files (self contained reason files with the external samples used integrated into the file). lemme tell you, you can get quite intricate in the programming.
i really dont see the difference between using something like redrum and using something like battery, other than the fact that battery has a whole bunch of crappy internal effects and a played out library. i suppose battery does have a couple of nice features like ADSR, and thats neat i suppose. otherwise, why you gonna go dig into some sample library full of drums that everyone and their mom has? why not engineer your own samples or go digging elsewhere?
i've had a couple of tunes that were signed and released using just reason by iteslf. they sound great when they come back from the cutting house
besides, you can always bounce out and import into cubase. you can also rewire, too. i know many producers in DNB who use reason specifically to write breaks on and rewire into cubase to use everything else.
i guess it's whatever is easiest for you. whatever interface, whatever sequencer. like i said before, it's all about how bangin it is when you bounce out the wave file.
either way, on the serious, fuck software. im taking a vacation from it for a bit as i've acquired an mpc 2000. it is a SERIOUIS piece of gear. makes all drums sound phat as shit. not sure how, but whenever i load a sample, somehow it gains a ton of attack.
there's something really beautiful about limiting yourself to working strictly with samples in this day and age where computers and vsts reign supreme. going back to the days of old when they wrote hiphop music using only samples and no synths. it's amazing how well you can use your imagination when youre limited to what you can work with.
of course, if you're quite sure that you can't do any sick programming in reason, i'd be quite abliged to challange you to a "break-off". you write a 60 second drum tune in whatever program you use, using only drums and whatever effects you want.
if i think it's hot as shit and i can't fuck with it, i'll bow down and show you my lucile ball hairdo.
if i think i can do any better, i'll show you exactly what reason is capable of.
