the only mushroom stomping myth i've ever heard is that stomping or kicking toadstools will keep them from growing back. on par with the old belief that it was bad luck to walk by them, which i believe is where toadstool kicking originated.

That plucking mushrooms rather than cutting near the base damages the mycelium and inhibits fruiting.

Not True! You just gotta be careful and wiggle them out, not rip them brutishly out of their home.

i've heard a couple of off the wall and persistent myths and misconceptions:

'you have to flick them and then they turn completely'
'you have to squirt water into the spores with a syringe and extract them to make them active' [heard that one twice]
'when you grow them you have get some ropey mycellia and grow it under the right conditions so they'll come out the right kind to make you tr!p ballz0rz'

mostly they, like all the misconceptions i've heard, come from completely misreading something or not understanding the terminology or context, then often telling it to somebody else who understands it even less and then repeats it.

i don't know about growing back faster,  but stomping a mushroom into the ground would in effect smear it's spores back into a viable substrate... just don't try it with dung lovers

let's see... hunting myths...

how about this one I've been seeing lately.

Look for the ones with purple juice. (huh?) Or the ones that bleed blue. (wtf?) Or the ones that bruise purple. (saw some of those today, but I don't think they'd make me trip bawlz0rxsxz)

any brown mushroom is okay to eat, any white one is poisonous. (good idea to stay away from all-white ones, but still... bad info both ways, and a good way to get sick or dead.)

coon is good at IDing pan subbs.

True or false does thumping the mushroom before you pick it drop spores so they'll grow back?

A guy I went hunting with told me that, but he seemed less experianced than myself.

No, flicking nor thumping the caps helps disperse spores. Spores will have already dropped if you pick mature mushrooms, and if they are immature, there will be no fully formed spores to drop off the gills.

If thumping or flicking mushroom caps worked, you wouldn't have to wait hours for spore prints to finish, you could simple flick the cap above the paper, and the spores would fall. Of course, that doesn't work.

There are some funny mushroom hunting myths here in Texass....

One I have heard is you can only pick them during the morning, "otherwise they turn to poison". Ive also seen people who think a cube cap covered in purple/black spores makes it poisoned.

Another great thing people like to say down here in the dirty south is you have to flip over the cow shit to find mushrooms. I dont understand this. I mean sometimes you can find a pin or two that hasnt poked out the side of the dung but this shit is weak.

I love all the people that claim to have found cyans in the summer! LOL.

Or a good one I heard on Thursday actually, if you walk around a night in a cardboard fridge box (with a flash light hanging from above) along the edges of golf course fairways you'll find the right kind. Just watch out that the sun doesn't come out cause apparently that's what happened to this guy's friend and he got arrested.

I just hate the people that have never really gone hunting and try and tell you what to do. Or they see a picture of a cyan or lib and say, "oh yeah, i see those all the time where i work/go to school/whatever"

NO YOU DONT! YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE FUCK YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT.

the same people that will go out "hunting" and pick every single mushroom and them come back and ask me which ones are good. AND THEN ARGUE WITH ME ABOUT IT!

Well if our planet did not have a Moon, not much life would excist here on Earth. I believe the Moon phases play some role in how mushrooms behave, certainly not significant, but I am sure it has some impact. It is all speculation I suppose. From an astronomical standpoint, what is happening in our universe right now is beyond anything a human could ever fully understand.

Cubes grow in California. Ive argued with people about this soo many times.

They allways say, "You cant know that for sure".

I usually just give up and tell them, "Ok go and look for you non-existant wild californian cubensis, IM going to look for some cyans".

Ever done a sporeprint... no didnt think so.

"They only grow in the early hours of the morning"
Yeah, just like when trees go underground overnight.

"yeah those grow all over my garden"
:|

"liberty caps only grow on south facing hills"

this is actualy interesting, as flicking a cap would and does release spores, only in numbers dramatically fewer than natural discharge.

I have heard that to find cubes:

1. The cows have to have a special kind of shot.
2. The cows have to be grain fed. (not just good ole hay)
3. Cubes do not grow north of HWY 20 in GA. (wrong)
4. They will dry up in mere minutes once the sun hits them.

God, its so funny the crazy shit people will tell just because their dad's cousin's best friend, who happened to try the once in the 60's, tell them about mushrooms.
