Hello. Last night I caught a couple of kids (15ish) in the yard with flashlights picking these. Not that I really care but I'd just like to know if they are poisonous or not. They are an orange colour at the peak and white around the edge. The stalks are fibrous and hollow. They grew in clumps on the back lawn under some fir trees. I tried to figure it out on the website here but I'd figure I'd leave it to the experts. Any help would be great. Thanks.

location?

it's hard to tell from the picture but they look like they could be Hypholoma fasciculare, the Sulphur tuft mushroom; a toxic species.

there are other possibilities. you might try taking a spore print.

if teens where picking them in the night, they might have mistaken them for a Gymnopilus such as G. junonius [formerly G. spectabilis], a psilocybian, if terrible tasting species.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.
