Eus questions why South Africans have no difficulty displaying the dagga-leaf emblem
Any visitor to our country must speculate if the marijuana plant, like the Canadian maple leaf, is a South African National Symbol. A favourite bumper sticker, used mainly by those lawless killers on our roads - taxi drivers - displaying the dagga-leaf emblem, has become akin to displaying the Flag.
Teenagers proudly wear caps and T-shirts, with the dagga emblem displayed as a badge; as if drug dependence is something to boast about.
At flea markets, many of the goods on sale display the dagga sticker; much like a registered trademark such as the Nike slash, which has long been popular and recognisable.
According to some sources, smoking dagga causes mood changes, often accompanied by altered perceptions of time and space. This is may be one of the reasons why taxi drivers “lose control” of their vehicles and often drive into stationary objects and across red traffic lights.
Although marijuana has not been proved to be physically addictive, and no physical withdrawal symptoms occur when its use is discontinued, psychological dependence does develop.
Many smokers use Mandrax to heighten the pleasure-giving effects. This in turn, leads to the use of even harder drugs.
Long-term marijuana users are said to develop an “amotivational syndrome” characterized by passivity, decreased motivation, and preoccupation with drug use.
The danger with teenagers, who become preoccupied with this drug, is that they become “problem” kids. The effects are normally clearly noticeable by their weak performance at school and antisocial behaviour.
Like alcohol intoxication, marijuana intoxication impairs reading comprehension, memory, speech, problem-solving ability, and reaction time. That, and the fact that smoking this drug is illegal, should be enough to convince parents and adults to speak out against its use by teenagers.
Trivial question: what is our National Tree?
Move to the top of the class, all of you who said “Real Yellowwood.”

So is this about marijuana or is it about dagga? I'm confused.
Do they call marijuana dagga over there or something?

Well, I'm sure people will disagree with you on that, but it's a stupid law. Like sodomy laws, but people still do not approve of gays or drugs, because the majority of people are fucking stupid, and don't realise it's not going to come get them or their kids or their pets.

Wow. The “amotivational syndrome” argument is still used?
I guess they do call Cannabis Dagga. I initially thought they were talking about Wild Dagga. I'm jealous that they have Mandrax (Quaaludes).
