Harvesting Mushrooms

I have 5 cakes of B+ in my FC, two of which are fruiting already. I was wondering, when one of my mushrooms matures, should I pick it off the cake or should I wait untill all the other cakes are done and then harvest the entire flush. Will harvesting the mushrooms one at a time affect the cake in any way?

It could. it's a good idea just to pop the caps off of the mature ones, leaving the stipes there.
as the stipe ages, it'll blue some, but this is okay.
if you harvest the whole thing, you could easily disrupt the shrooms growing in the same cluster or next to it. that's why I say to only remove the cap.
removing the cap prevents the spores from making a mess, and it gives you something to do while you wait for the rest of the flush... making a print.

In an ideal world it would be nice if the entire lot would flush together but if you leave the mushrooms to mature and they drop spores this can hinder your next flush which you dont want, also the more nutrients the mushrooms use from the cake the shorter amount of time the cake will live also resulting in a loss of fruits on the next flush i would pick them dunk and roll the cake which gives it a lease of life then let it fruit again done right and you could get a few bonus flushes Good luck GD

You don't have to harvest cakes like casings (all at once). Unless the smaller ones are clumped with the mature one I would remove it. Just use care.
It's up to you really but I like to get them right when the veil breaks. Seems like the other ones on the cake get a nice growth spurt when you remove the mature ones.

I like to try and harvest all of the fruits from one flush within a 24-hour time period. Sometimes, with multispore you'll have some pop up way early though, and you gotta do what you gotta do if you want to avoid a mess. Of course, cutting the caps is always an option like Mitch advises.

when would be a good time to cut a cap? when the veil breaks?
can you cut a cap before the veil breaks and still place it in sterile conditions and will it still drop spores even though you cut it prematurally?
do aborts drop spores?

1>If for a print let it open abit then cut.
2>I dont believe so, might be wrong though.
3>no, they stay small.

I was planning on harvesting just as the veil breaks therefore the caps wont be dropping any spores

I pick as they mature. If a mature mushroom is part of a cluster, or very close to a growing mushroom, simply slice it off near the base with a sharp knife. RR
