Fruiting Chambers or Terrariums?
    #7497281 - 10/08/07 12:07 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I'm just getting into mycology, and been doing some studying on the process, and noticed that a lot of the videos on youtube feature really basic fruiting boxes (usually a large rubbermaid with holes in it and perlite in the bottom). But I've also noticed that there's tons of teks on here on how to build a terrarium. I was just wondering if it really matters to have a self sustaining terrarium, or if I can get by with the simpler fruiting box in the youtube teks. budget is kind of an issue, and I don't really mind if the non-automatic ones need a little maintenance now and then.

The ones you see in the videos by RR will work just fine. I've got three of them going right now and haven't had any problems whatsoever. I'm doing both cakes and casings in them. Just make sure that you can fan them a few times a day real good for FAE. Other than that and an occasional misting, you'll be good to go. Just make sure to have about 4-5" of damp, well drained perlite. If you can, get yourself a good hygrometer so you can check the RH. The bins I use for the shotgun terrarium are Sterilite 64qt clear containers. I liked the Sterilite ones because I can see through the clear plastic better than I could on the clear ones from Rubbermaid. Hope this helps. GL

Mycology (from the Greek μύκης, meaning "fungus") is the study of fungi, their genetic and biochemical properties, their taxonomy, and their use to humans as a source for tinder, medicinals (e.g., penicillin), food (e.g., beer, wine, cheese, edible mushrooms) and entheogens, as well as their dangers, such as poisoning or infection.
