Very nice haul. I'm pretty sure that one on the bottom right isn't a lib. Looks more like a skull to me

They are beautiful! I'm glad you have found some, even if at high altitude. It gives me hope that there may be some here in the next few weeks. Do you think its the dryness or the high night temperatures that has been stopping them? Or both

have u had a look on the common yet?
lack of rain in the last month and too much rain over the summer is my guess as to why they are popping so late... all that flooding probably didnt do the mycelium any favours...
it has been a bit warm as well i guess, but it was t-shirt weather when i was picking yesterday

I have a question though, should i be snapping the stalks just before the mycelium root or pulling the whole fruit out?

better late than never indeed!
i think u could be right about that one being strictipes... ive always suspected that there were more than a single psilocybe species growing up there as they are very abundant and very varied in morphology also... but ive never really felt the need to differentiate between semilanceata and strictipes...
theres well over 50 acres which i have permission from the land owner to pick on, i usually have a chat to the farmer every time i go up there and he is more than happy to let me walk his fields so long as i respect his land... the bottle of whiskey i give him on my last hunt of the season helps too!
so yeah if there are only a few popping i sometimes walk all day in search of the best spots... but usually i find them on mass and not many people pick the area so 99% of the time i have no competition and they are all mine muwahahaha
Quote:
blacksun said: I have a question though, should i be snapping the stalks just before the mycelium root or pulling the whole fruit out?
pulling them does damage the mycelium... so strictly speaking u should snap them off... but im sure u can see from my pics that im a heavy handed brute and pluck them

Aha, my hunts last season(my first ever) yeilded under 100 grams dry powdered libs.
And i have access to only 1 spot of which is less than 2 acres Maybe we should go hunting together sometime.
P.S, i remember the big bottle of whisky and the note to the farmer with the bag of mushrooms

for my money, the biggest limit to semie hauls is the time you're willing to spend picking the little guys.

aah yes the season has well and truely started my friends.
These are the two harvests i've managed in my two expeditions this year so far..

unfortunately, like uarewotueat, i also have to endure a 115 mile round trip to get there!.. But on the positive side, i'd say my spot on the moors compares in terms of natural beauty... it's a large valley with a quaint little river running through it. Theres even an ancient stone bridge there to help you cross it!... but best of all the place is heaving with quality libs!
BTW, have you seen the rain today!! it's hammering it down all day in yorkshire, so i reckon my next trip out should be a proper haul.

yeah i was going to go out shooting today, but the rain has stopped play... im more than happy to see that its pissing it down though... should bring the little fellows out in force for the weekend!
theres some cool ancient sites up where i pick too... like this stone circle... 5500 years old if wot i have read is to be believed...

its not close enough to my main spot to give away the location though
the rest of the circles in the peaks are swarming with tourists, but this one has no path or signs, i usually take a walk over to it after my days hunting and chill for a while, never seen anyone else up there...

i didnt ask him actually... so far this year our conversation has been a passing "now then" i doubt he ever tried them though, he has had access to them for 25+ years and never tried them before... but his son showed alot of interest last year, kept coming over to me with a handful of mushrooms and asking if they were the right ones... so maybe he ate them lol

that's probably not far off the truth, and that place is fabulous. To me, it makes the mushrooms seem that bit more special when they are from such isolated, beautiful places.

i need to take a better camera in the future i think.

I have looked on both, although i think the South common is too overgrown in most places with only a few horses on it nowadays. I have also found some decent looking fields about which i think have more potential than the over picked commons. Loads of rain today

I have a feeling its the warm weather we are having that is helping the budding on the plateaus and on the northern slopes. The rain we had today will have them out like peas in a pod or is it shrooms in a bog... lol.

Hopefully I can find a few more other hunting areas this season.
Ill defo go and get a nice haul from my spot and then move on and see if i can find any other fruiting fields .
My spots are about 45mins to an hour walk away. In a car its 5 minutes tops . And on my motorbike. 3 minutes :P
Im hoping they pop up this week, so on the weekend there are a few decent mature fruits .

Right i know where you mean cheers.
I looked on the (west) common this morning but i was quite late so that may account for the lack of anything, did see the years first fly agaric on the way back though which is a good sign!

Had a walk down this afternoon (to common) found a patch of twenty or so but people were walking a few metres away so left them and couldn't find them again on return Found another patch a few minutes later though of about 15, most of them babies, i picked 6 big ones and left the little 'uns to grow. Will head down again later and tomorrow to get some more as i only spent 20 minutes earlier. I'm well chuffed

Great stuff! That last rain has done wonders. I went out again on Thursday night and found 30 or so more. I had a good time on Friday night with some friends Went out this morning and found that, in fact they are now everywhere.

Looks like some tastey finds.
The season seems to be pretty late down here, found a few pins but nothing major, so hopefully this weekend we should be in for a winner.
Luck to all.

Hmm. I went hunting last saturday, but its been quite dry and I didn't find squat (I've not yet had a successful hunt).
However, this weekend I intend for it to be different. I'm going to right next to stonehenge (danebury hill fort to be precise), as sheep graze on that hill and it has a habitat similar to those posted in the above pictures.
Any tips / recommendations?

sure was a nice misty morning for hunting in the mountains

was very cold though so i didnt stay out long... as u can see from some of the pics there was a frost the night before, so frosty libs were the order of the day... still found some very nice groups of libs though, despite the cold temps

they dont mind a little frost, they were still pinning however, i dont appreciate the cold much lol and its not ideal for the semi's either, this spells the beginning of the end for the little guys, few more cold frosty nights and it will be over, until next year
i wont have chance to go into that area again until next weekend, seeing the weather forecast for the next 2 weeks makes me think my hunting season is finished now... at high altitude anyway, might check out some lower areas closer to home...

thats my problem with living on the coast! the season hasn't even bloody started here yet!!!!! Its raining outside now though and the temperatures have been spot on so i don't see why they shouldn't be popping up! Mind we did have a mild frost a week or so ago :-S
trust me, a little frost isnt enough to put them off... my fields have had at least 4 frosts prior to sunday
your not the only person to have had nothing pop up this year ya know... wots area u in? they were a month later than usual where i pick this season... if the conditions are right and they aint growing, thats definately a bad sign
my original field didnt fruit much last season, so i went scouting the surrounding area and found new spots that were better than the first... maybe u should do the same... goodluck!

this is likely to be my last hunt of the season, the weather is going to take a turn for the worse starting tonight so that will probably kill the little guys off...
i only stayed out for a couple of hours this morning cos it was so damn cold, anyway i found a few...

im sure it was colder and windier than this forecast showed today... brrrr...

the sheep seemed pleased to see me when i arrived...

Nice hunt on your last day of the season mate, you still picked a fair batch considering you were only out for half an hour.
I wish i had your hunting skills!

These hauls should keep you occupied for about a year. Well done!

I know I am! Roll-on autumn.
It'll only be my second year picking them but I spent years hunting them prior to that.
