humidity at 94% grrrrrrrr
    #7494788 - 10/07/07 03:04 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

well I took some advice and I tapped up alot of holes and my rh went up 1% to 93. So I added a bunch more perlite to make about 4 inches and it only brought it up 1% to 94%. whats the freaking deal, i just strive for 1 more percent of rh. Should I take off all the tape on the holes or what. really frusterated. If I cant correct the problem I guess ima go get a new bigger rubbermaid thing and a crap load of perlite

12in wide x 17in long x 10in depth

that is the size of my current fc

Or go buy you some lava rock and some bubble stones and a fish tank pump.

A hydroponic shop is where you go buy stuff to grow things hydroponically. You can just use lava rocks though instead of buying hydroton if you want.

I wouldn't stress. 90%+ is perfectly fine for growing mushrooms. No need to be anal about single percentage points.

94% is fine but I'm gonna bet it's the gauge. They start to fuckup in the high 90's a lot of the time.

humidity for cakes vs. cased substrates [Re: pmsskg]
    #7496175 - 10/08/07 02:14 AM (16 years, 5 months ago)

you don't.

85% humidity is for use with cased substrates.
seeing how it appears you are using a rubbermaid and perlite,
it also then appears that you are using pf style cakes.

When you have a colonized substrate, with a casing layer applied
to it, then you use a lower humidity to encourage moisture to
evaporate from the casing into the environment (transpiration).

But you don't want to force your cakes to puke out their moisture
into the environment, you want them to keep it and pump it into
mushrooms, so the humidity stays high the whole time.

having 4 inches of damp perlite will give you the 99%+ RH you
are looking for, no matter what your hygrometer says I bet.

Never. I fruit cased substrates in the high 90% range too. The key is air exchange. Even at 99% humidity, moisture will be evaporating from your casing layer, provided you have enough air exchange, giving you two of the three major pinning triggers.
