The Forgotten Rye Tray

I spawned some BRFS to rye jars a couple weeks ago, and had about 2 qts left over ( no more jars!). So i threw it in a 12"x12" pan and covered it with foil, then baked in the oven at 300F for about 20 minutes. After it cooled, I knocked it up with a 1/4 pt. of brf crumbles and put it on a shelf and forgot about it.
Well, i did forget about it..completely!
There were no air holes punched in the top foil. I discovered it today and thought I'd find a big mess, but instead I found this:

It looks about 80% colonized and zero contams! I'll used this for some Coir/Coffee tubs in a few days. Mexican strain.
I'm pleasantly surprised, but even more so, when I saw there were no air vents in the foil. Why did the tray survive, even flourish w/o ventilation holes? The foil was wrapped around the lipped edge of the pan, tight but not airtight.

the only time that the mushroom mycelium really even needs alot of oxygen and fresh air is when its time to fruit, other than that, high concentrations of carbon dioxide are not harmful, and often expected within confined jars/trays.
point in example: everyones jars always seem to do alright, sometimes with as little as one needle hole for air.

You said it. The foil was not airtight. This allowed for the gas exchange it needed. Congrats on your success.

I wouldn't expect that one to turn out again It looks like you have great luck, I hope that is indeed mushroom mycelium.
