Are you or a relative deaf? Do you "sign" (ASL)?
    #7496159 - 10/08/07 02:04 AM (16 years, 5 months ago)

I'm quoting Sheepish here:
I'm not sure what percentage, but profoundly deaf (so I'm actually quite deaf). It works in terms of what frequencies my dead cochlear hairs can actually pick up. Higher frequencies are harder for me to hear (requires MASSIVE volume to hear those) but lower frequencies are easier to hear and is combined with the sensation in the body of feeling it. While I can hear most things, speech recognition is hard for me. I can hear the speech and the words, but my ears don't recognise what is being said a lot of the time. I rely on lip reading and body language cues to fill in the blanks.
Doctors said I wouldn't get past the reading age of 5 (or something around there) and that I would never be able to speak. I'm currently reading 1984 and enjoy reading lots of books. I can also speak  Not perfect, but as well as I can. The problem with talking when deaf is that I can't hear exactly what a normal hearing person would; so since speech sounds different to me, I will pronounce it how I tend to hear it.
Some deaf people aren't able to do well with reading/writing. I think it's a combination of using sign language (sign language speech is different and doesn't use as many words; it is less complex than spoken english) and that many deaf people don't always good have speech skills, so don't verbalise much. However, I don't really know the real reason. I personally don't use sign language, so I don't think in terms of signs when reading. I don't think most deaf people do either, but again, I wouldn't know.

Now from me: I only know some very basic sign and th ABC's which I taught to my hearing students last year to see if they could pick  it up. No one in my family is deaf but we had a regular guest who is and so we developed an interest there when we got books on the subject to be able to communicate. I attended her wedding and sat at the table with deaf guests and one woman who hears and signs...the hands were flying and it was amazing!

 to Sheepish who parenthetically has a gorgeous tush you can view in the Naked Men thread lol,... and all hearing impaired or deaf citizens of the world. Wishing you well man!

Sign language is pretty interesting. I used to work with a guy who was more deaf than I was (he also stopped wearing hearing aids.. one of those interesting deaf culture things), and I would try my best to sign back using my extremely useless sign language. I even tried attending sign language classes a few years ago, but never managed to grasp it enough. Since all my friends are hearing, I have little use for it (and I don't work with the deaf man anymore).
Like you said, watching deaf people using it fluently just blows my mind. I'd recommend going to a night class to further your sign language if you're still interested.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'd very much like to translate for the deaf one day.

Very intersted...i'd like to translate for othes...lectures etc. if I could one day.
Btw..do you waer hearing aides? I was a pre-school assistant b/f teaching and during that year a deaf girl flushed her VERY expensive hearing aides down the loo! Oh no! :o

I read 1984 in like 1977 or so... Facinating comment on human nature/communism eh?

Yep. They're bloody expensive things. The moulds for the hearing aids are pretty costy too.

That is so cool that you took a shot just now, thanks. LOVE long hair on guys...this new style of totally shaved looks military to me though it must be easier after a shower.
You remind me of Geddy Lee of RUSH...

Are implants only for the profoundly deaf?

That's actually an old photo. Used to get questions on irc so I have photographic evidence in case they don't believe me.
Long hair isn't about the ease, it's about the beauty  No need for hair dryers anyway, that's what the wind is for.

Cochlear implants (if that's what you're referring to) are generally for those who haven't had much luck with normal hearing aids. They connect through the side of the head directly into the cochlea. I only have the normal "behind the ear" type with hearing aid moulds that fit into my ear canal. Behind the ear hearing aids are the bigger, bulkier, more powerful ones suited to profoundly deaf hearing loss. Shame, cos I would love to get those "in the ear" types. I have to tie them to my ears when I go to a concert, and that's quite annoying...

When I was in second grade, I learned sign language for a school play.  Since then, time has eroded all knowledge in my mind of the signing arts, however I'd like to get back into it again.  There are definite advantages being able to communicate without sound.  Maybe when I go back to college.

My own hearing seems to be about average; my main problem seems to be hearing things that "aren't there."  Not that much of a big deal though as I can still function normally despite the crowds chattering in my ear.  I've managed to weed them out significantly in recent months but they still use reality to come through.

Very cool to finally see a pic of Sheepish; I remember his posts back when I was a newb!

Sheepish,
yes that's what I meant. Thanks for the explination.

My daughter has a slight hearing loss on the level of voices and teachers had to be asked to get eye contact w/her b'f assuming she heard them. She hears noises around her just fine so if there was rustling of paper and scraping of chairs she'd hear that and not the teacher.

Once they were clued in it worked out fine.

ALS can be used across a room...useful at concerts or in a crowd. Tying hearing aides to you during a concert must be annoying but I picture a cool head band over the black hair...too cool!

It's more like string taped to the hearing aid and looped around the bottom of my ear and another piece of string tied higher up, then the 2 are tied in a tight knot near my ear lobe. Otherwise they go flying when I headbang

Damn! From water in the ear! Infection can insidious if not treated or not treated right away or the correct way. Sorry to hear it. So ear phones are useless except for one side. I'm sure you enjoy music anyhow.

Hey people: Any one else deaf or anyone have a deaf family member?

Hey sheepish I can personally contribute much of my hearing loss to seeing the band on your T-shirt about 9 too many times. I now have permanent tinnitus in both ears at a moderate level of ringing. It fucken sucks and Im pretty shore it makes it harder to hear certain frequencies though I have never been tested. I have allot of hearing loss in my family aswell so I know what its like.

i have a cousin who was born deaf so i know how to sign a little. i should know a lot more than i do though, and i feel bad that i haven't made more of an effort. it's weird at family reunions too because he's my age so it's always up to me to pal around with him which can be a bummer sometimes since he's always handing me jesus pamplets and shit, but that's ok i suppose. i can't say much of anything to him right now because he's in a catatonic state after being raped by (you guessed) a church youth counselor. i hope that scum bag gets what he deserves.

I commend you for making your cousin feel comfortable but personally I'd sure ask him to cut out the pamphlet thing. All people who abuse children must be made an example of.

If convicted rapists (beyond any doubt like it was caught on a hidden camera or something) were castrated I believe it would bring the number of cases down.

I know that if someone wants to commit an act of violence they'll use anything but rapists use their body cuz it's more degrading to the victim that way, they don't get caught with a weapon and they get off on it in a sick way in the process.

I feel strongly on the subject but thankfully, was never raped. I avoided partying with people I didn't know for that reason.
