Pressure Cooking a syringe?
    #7495251 - 10/07/07 04:57 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

hey there, i've seen pictures and videos with this method in there and was wondering how to go about doing it.

Seems pretty streight forward, but i might be missing something.

is it just suck water back (10cc's worth), wrap in tinfoil and go...how long does it go in for and at how many PSI?
how long do i wait until it's cools?

anything i miss please fill me in

suck boiling water into your empty syringe and squirt it back out 3-4 times do it one more time but this time leave the water in the syringe put the cap on the syringe let it cool and there you go you have a sterile syringe w/o messing with your pc. it works great. just remember to flame the needle before you use it

if it sat in the water while PCing thats why .. you need to keep it out of the water.. at least thats what I do and never had a warped syringe

I usually just put mine standing up in an empty quart jar and throw them in the PC with any grains I am sterilizing at the time. Eliminates separate steps.

This isn't done yet, but it's a start.
It'll give you some sort of idea on how to go about doing it.

If you want water in your syringe, like to make a spore syringe,
then use the method where you stand it up, needle up, in a wide
mouth quart jar. If you have less than 10 syringes, that's probably
the way you'll use every time. Hope this helps a bit.

Needles aren't meant to be reused too many times. The tips
degrade quickly. The needle could have bent, like said above,
because the syringe was not standing up, it was lying down.
If the syringe stands up, needle pointing up, in a quart jar then
you should be fine.

I just boil the used syringes in a large pot of water, and then remove directly to the glovebox or flowhood. I don't believe I've ever PC'd a syringe. Plastic doesn't harbor bacterial endospores, so boiling water will kill off any live bacteria or mold spores that might be present.

Ah, memories of chipping melted plastic off the bottom of my pressure cooker

As mentioned, you don't need to PC your syringes. I've notices that after a few PCs my rubber stoppers stop sealing.

Same here. I sterilize them separately though (30 min @ 15 psi). I always pc my quart jars for 90 minutes. I'm afraid if I pc a syringe that long it will melt or deform some how.

So far, my syringes have all survived the hour long PC I do with my grains.
