New to Game System Emulators and Roms for them

can anybody help me out? where to start? what to download? etc.
i tried out some stuff i downloaded myself and burned it since it was an iso file and the cd didnt work

i dunno... I've noticed roms on torrent sites.
a few years ago, I was real into emulation. The emu's I had were MAME (arcade rom emu), the NEO GEO emulator, and of course the superNES and Sega genesis emus...
we also had a lot of fun with the dreamcast system, as it is pretty easy to get iso's and burn them for use with the DC hardware. I had about 200 DC games, most of which I got off hotline (I don't think that prog works anymore, its so old)
recently, I've looked into modding my xbox360 so I can d/l free games. It looks pretty easy, actually. You need like $20 worth of hardware to flash your 360, then it will play burned games.

WPS: that is pretty awesome... if i could get an xbox 360 to do that i might buy one. what exactly do you need to do to make that happen?

i tried the n64 emulator and then i tried a rom and its just saying "nemulating..." and its been doing that for like 15 mins... is that normal? cus that seems pretty odd

OK... So ive tried a bunch of diff roms... i extract the roms and there are a lot of files... if i click on one then it just plays some intro or something and stops... what am i doing wrong, what do i need to do?
