after 3 years... growing again
    #7492840 - 10/06/07 10:03 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

i wasted a bunch of money and time a while back trying to grow a few cakes. Out of like 20 only one grew to fruiting and I only got 1 flush from it. now I'd like to think I'm a little more patient and well-read on the topic. So I have 6 brf+vermiculite cakes that I just inoculated. And I poked around in my closet and set this up:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/mcnewbie/fruitingchamber02.jpg

It is an ultrasonic humidifier, piped through a 3/4" clear vinyl tube into an 18gal container. The humidifier and an antimicrobial UV light (not a blacklight) are set to a timer, to run 8 times a day for 5 minutes. The vinyl tube runs along the length of the UV light, and is covered loosely with a sheet of aluminum foil to reflect back through the tubing.
I am hoping that not too much condensate will form inside the chamber because of the tube, ie condensing inside the tube and running back into the humidifier instead of spitting water droplets into the tank.

The inside of the tube, the humidifier internals and the inside of the chamber will be cleaned with 91% isopropyl alcohol and then benzalkonium chloride bacteriostat will be applied.

If this goes well I will set up some casings with rye berries.

chances are, the humidifier hooked up to that tub will be overkill, easily over-saturating all your casings and making it prone to stalled development, and worse yet, trichoderma and other nasty molds.

all that aside, i (and im sure others) are glad to have you back and involved with our beloved hobby. good luck and many great flushes to you.

What I am really looking for is a small inline fan assembly to pipe regular, filtered air into the tub. The humidifier is as much for airflow as it is for moisture.

thanks for your advice!

An ultrasonic doesn't really produce much airflow. A coolmist works a lot better for this.

also, no need to filter the air. You do not want to use the UV light. It dosent have to be a black light to be bad. When using only UV you get mutations. UV light is in the 300-400nm spectrum. while this is ok if acompanied with high amounts of 500-700nm range. use a standard floroscent fixture. like 10bucks at lowes. good luck with your grow.

Once your cakes are fully colonized, they don't need a sterile environment. They should be able to vie for themselves. However, if it makes you feel better, a cool mist does have an intake filter.

I don't have to keep them sterile while they're fruiting? Every other time I've tried previously they got contaminated after transplanting them into the grow chamber.

The UV light is not to grow by. It was to sanitize the wet air coming in from the humidifier. In fact I got a dark colored tub so less UV would get through it. I already have a CFL set up.
