quiting smoking, blah blah blah

yeah so i got some patches in the mail, they seem to work, it looks like i'm quitting smoking.
its the third day now, and i did smoke 2 at a party yesterday, but all in all i feel as though this time i will really quit. i'm hoping that whole thing of "if you smoke one ciggarrete you're going to become addicted again" is fake.
i'll let you know when i'm at the one week mark.
(i'm having trouble figuring out if i have to COMPLETELY stop. like if i quit for 2 weeks and then i'm at another party, will it really mess me up that much to smoke one or two? would it mess up my qutting if i smoked once a week at poker night? i don't know, there are certain things i can't imagine not smoking during, like tripping. i want to be one of those people who smoke socially, like one pack a month or something. i guess the first step to figuring that stuff out is breaking the habit outside of special social events... )

This helps to quit. Spend your money before you buy cigs, so you can't afford them. That's how I quit cigs at least, lol. I've been cig free pretty much for 4 months almost. Sure I've bummed one or two on really drunk nights, maybe once or twice during that entire 4 months, but that ain't bad. Just because you smoke one night after quitting doesn't make you addicted again, thankfully.

Not to sound like an evangelist or anything but I have quit several times. For months. Then I had one, just socially. I smoke about a pack and a half a day. Do your own math.

Good advice here. Keep it up, though. It's well worth it.

I quit smoking one time for 3 months. Then my friend got shot and I've been smoking a pack a day since then. I want to give it another shot, but the stress level has been way to high for that lately. Someday soon hopefully.

NY is a great state for quitting smoking. they send you stop smoking patches or gum or whatever.
today they called me to see how i was doing. i told them i wanted the weaker nicotine patches and they said they'd send it out tommorow.
the lady told me to chew on twizzlers and eat things with cinnamon in it.

I just got a prescription for Chantax. I'll let ya know if it works or not. Going to start taking it Friday, then it's ween off cigarettes for 7 days, then cold turkey on the 8th. Supposedly works. We'll see. I'll let ya know.
I hit that mark this Saturday. Went out of town for a wedding, had way too many stoges and felt way to shitty Sunday morning when I had to fly home. I'm ready to feel healthy. It's been awhile.

Man, I don't know. I wouldn't recommend smoking one cigarette a week on poker night. That's going to turn into three or four on poker night pretty quick.
I just stopped smoking cigarettes on July 5th this year. I'd been smoking for almost five years - one six-month failed quit somewhere in the middle. It really wasn't as hard as I'd figured. I was irritable as hell for a while there, and of course I still want one occasionally (when I'm drunk! - but I haven't, not once). But looking at older smokers, holding on to my money, not smelling awful, breath that doesn't make the baby nazz cry, not to mention the numerous health benefits of avoiding tobacco - these things all help me out.
What exactly is your reason for quitting?

> will it really mess me up that much to smoke one or two?
If you want to quit, then yes, it will really mess up your chances of success. Nicotine causes changes in the brain. It takes a long time for the brain to repair the damage, but is very easy to "pick off the scab" so to speak.
You need to decide, are you going to quit or not? If you are going to quit, then quit completely. If you are not going to quit completely, then don't bother trying to quit at all.
> i want to be one of those people who smoke socially, like one pack a month or something.
My limited experience with nicotine would lead me to believe that there is no such thing. (Obviously, there are a few people that are capable of doing this, but they are far and few between.)

If you want to smoke occasionally on poker night, why not have a cigar instead?
I quit smoking entirely about 5 years ago, but I still enjoy a nice cigar now and then. I can't smoke a regular cigarette anymore, because they make me sick, but a cigar is something different.

I'd like to quit, but it just seems unrealistic at this point in my life. Maybe when things settle down and I don't have to use tobacco as a crutch because I'm so tense.
instead of quitting, I just cut down to 3-5 cigarettes a day whenever I feel like I smoke too much. I never smoke more than a half pack a day, and thats if I'm on drugs that make you want to smoke.
unfortunately, I've heard the risks of smoking are the same whether you are a light smoker or a heavy smoker. But it certainly feels like cutting down helps.

I just put my patch on again today... I fell off the wagon over the weekend...
Seuss is correct as usual. I've "quit" countless times, and I always break down to have one or two, then it's three, then five. Before you know it, you'll be back to your normal intake. It really does suck.
But, with all the people around here dealing with opiate withdrawl, I hardly feel capable of complaining!!

Opiates are easier to quit than nicotine. For humans, nicotine is the most addictive substance known; worse than heroin or meth.

It sure feels that way!! It's almost like mind control. I seriously want to quit, but there is just a voice in my head telling me to smoke... You just have to put the patch on every morning and try and forget about it.

I like to think that I could quit if I really wanted to, I just don't want to. Maybe that's just the insidious demon of addiction, whispering in my ear.
I enjoy smoking a lot. If I were to quit enjoying it, then it would have no purpose, and I generally tend to quit doing things that have no purpose.
Sometimes the health effects of smoking get to me, but only when I overdo it with the cigs. I know a lot of people who get fed up with it all at once and just up and quit one day. These people almost always relapse. I think its a lot more realistic to just cut down and use cognitive therapy techniques to manage your habit and keep it at an appropriate level.

That's the same trap I'm in... The problem is YOU/WE ARE NOT ENJOYING IT.
You/we are simply filling the need created by the damn nicotine. We only THINK we are enjoying it, and that is the demon of addiction.
Smoking cigs HAS no purpose... Just keep repeating that. It's only purpose is to stave off the cravings, and that's pretty pointless!

Cigarettes are so hard to quit because the activities associated with them are much more similar to "compulsions" rather than a true "drug addiction".
There is little evidence that nicotine in non-tobacco form is addicitve.
In blinded studies you see evidence for this: de-nicotinized cigarettes alleviate cravings, nicotine replacement therapies have a horrible success rate etc etc. Cigarettes are very unique indeed.

yeah, i'm really not so worried, i have 4-5 friends that have quit smoking, but still have 3-4 socially on poker night (or the occasional chess night). i'd say more importantly, for some reason this time it really feels like i'm ready to quit, where all the past times i tried i wasn't ready. i don't think it will be a problem to stop smoking outside of social events, and over time i'm sure i won't really feel the need to smoke during poker and stuff. that patch has been working pretty good for me, but it makes me slightly sick, so i've been having to put it on and take it off 2-3 times a day.
Thanks for the advice on smoking the cigar, i've actually been wanting to make that switch for about a year now but i haven't been able to find a cigar that i enjoy. i've only tried about 7-8 but most of them are too... i don't know. any suggestions for a good one?

abrupt withdrawal is the most effective way to quit, IMO and IME.
the first week is physically the most difficult, depending on how long one has been smoking, but this needs to be endured.
if if helps then even go on a retreat. get away from your daily environment and EMPOWER yourself.
the number one reason why people who try to quit fail is because they chose to continue. it's that simple.
one only truly quits once.

I've gone weeks, days and even months... Then, for some insane reason, I suddenly break down and have one. It's like my brain convinces me it will be OK, and you promise yourself it'll be only one... or maybe two.
Suddenly, I'm standing at WaWa (7-11) buying a pack.
I'm back to square one again.

day 6.
seems like there are many paths...
i'm kind of annoyed at how slow its going. i want it to be like a month so i can actually say i quit, ya know? right now i'm just some guy who hasn't smoked alot of ciggarrettes this week. once its been a month i'll feel comfortable saying i quit.
