I went to a cow pasture about 30 minutes south of atlanta georgia and found these shrooms, and some pure white ones. I was told that you could eat any of the non-white ones. im trying to figure out if these are deadly or awesome. any ideas? I know its not a golden colour on the top, but the only golden looking ones I found were little balls that were filling with what I believe in spores (a bunch of powder). Is there any other reason why these shrooms arent that big? they are all alittle bit bigger than a quarter on the top, the bottoms are like a dark-ish colour, so it was hard to tell if there was a change. any help is appreciated!

ok... research consists of looking up psychoactive mushrooms on the web, somewhere like Google image search might be a good place to start, and seeing what they look like. There are many different psychoactive species, so the next step is to look in the FAQs on this site, and determine which ones grow in your area. After that, you might try researching their habitats to see what they typically grow in, on, around, etc.
Finally, you should go hunting in those specific areas and see if you can find the specific mushrooms that you are looking for. With the thousands of species that likely grow in your area, going out and picking random mushrooms is probably a huge waste of time. If you want to be a hunter, you find out what you want to hunt, then figure out where it lives, then you hunt it. Just like hunting animals, I wouldn't go to the beach to hunt deer, and I wouldn't go to the woods to hunt duck.
A field guide will help you immensely, especially if you can find one specifically dealing with your region.
Also, spend some time looking at pics of toxic and deadly species as well, and try like hell to learn what they are. Don't get them confused, and always... ALWAYS get a 100% positive ID on any mushrooms you plan on eating. 99% sure is not good enough and can mean the difference between a good time and death.

Oh, and that thing ain't shit. Don't eat it.
In cow pastures, you want to find Psilocybe cubensis, and Copelandia cyanensis. aka cubes and copes.
Copes look greyish white, so whoever told you white was bad is not correct. You don't want to randomly eat white mushrooms, though, as some of the most deadly mushrooms in the world are all white. It is easy to tell the difference between them and other mushrooms, but that's where the research comes in, and doing proper ID requests here. Copes also bruise a deep blue when handled, and this is not a "kinda sorta might be blue" it's a "damn, those things look like you broke a pen and it leaked on them" kind of thing. It's not something you'll mistake for another color if you ever see it. This bluing reaction is the active chemical reacting to air, so you don't really want to beat the hell out of them, as they'll lose potency. You won't need more than a few of these to leave reality behind.
Cubes are yellowish gold fading to white edges when mature, and tend to be a more caramel color with a spiral of tiny white flecks when immature and unopened (pin or button stage). They also bruise blue, and the stems are white so if you break the stem, especially at a solid part of the base, you'll see a definite blue color.
There is really no mistaking this color, either. Some people will actually fool themselves into believing a Chlorophyllum molybdites or Agaricus is bruising blue, but if you show it to someone who has seen it before, they'll know exactly what the bruising looks like and can help ID what you have.
