Patching is done to help ensure an even pin set. It gives the "slower" myc a chance to poke through and catch up to the myc you just covered or patched.

yeah, your delaying those first mycs form pinning so the rest of the casing has time to catch up. if you patch a few times, your left with a relatively even spread of myc throughout your whole casing. THEN, all of it pins, instead of that little bit of myc that first appeared had you not patched.
