Introducing a new species to the wild?
    #7493646 - 10/07/07 06:49 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I raised this idea a couple of years ago when I was actively using this board, but didn't pursue the idea very far.

I'm in Newfoundland, Canada, where the only real active species is libs. Amanita muscaria grow here as well, and one time I was absolutely positive I spotted a bunch of big laughing gyms growing out of a tree stump in a local park (however when I came back the next day to check them out the city had removed the entire stump).

Would it be possible to introduce a psilocybe species to the wild here?

The climate is pretty temperate (though on the cool side), and the island is almost entirely populated with evergreen trees, with a few deciduous trees thrown in the mix. We get a lot of rain and our winters are very long.

Ideas? What species could possibly survive our climate and be suited to our environment?

P. Azurescens would seem to grow perfect in your colder climate as they require cold temps to fruit. Plus the are one of the most potent of shrooms. Good luck in your endevor.

I believe that cubensis is subtropial .. not sure if they would stand a hard freeze up north in the wild.. but the other poster is right about the azures good luck with them

Check these links out. You should be able to get your spores for $1US or close too. Pretty good deal eh?

That would be the same essential idea of growing outdoors, no? Just the only catch is that you want the spores to spread into the grass so the cows can eat it and carry the mushrooms elsewhere. I think anyway. Maybe make some spawn and put patties all around it. I don't know. Maybe i'm crazy. Sounds plausible.
