Well finally i got another camera to take some pics with, got some cool stuff i want to share unfortunately it's a pretty shitty cam, so the pics kinda suck but you get the point
ok
for this one i took 3 fully colonized pint-sized BRF cakes(Brazilians )and crumbled them into ziplock bags seperately to make an inch deep substrate with a 1/4-1/2" casing layer of 70/30 MGMC/Vermiculite i was kind of worried about MGMC being nutritious but it seems to be doing OK i think
For this one it's just a pint-sized BRF cake colonized with multispore amazon strain i understand that there's no scale, but i must say this is a rather large cake, and a rather large pin
cheers! <3shroomery

to make an inch deep substrate with a 1/4-1/2" casing layer ..anarchOi
dont expect those mushies to get real big..my first casings were only 1-2" deep and although they will out perform cakes the shrooms will be small compared to ALOT of grows on this board

yeah i know man, they aren't very large at all
most of them are breaking their veils at like an inch long.. except the caps haven't started bending up yet even though they broke their veils days ago
i intend to let them mature a bit so that i can get a LITTLE bit of weight out of the deal

what depth substrate do you guys reccomend? does casing depth really matter aslong as it's not too much? as in, can too little ever really be a bad thing?

I use the MGMC/verm as my casing as well....also at about roughly a 70/30 ratio. The times I had cased with it I did about 1/4" to 1/3" and never had a problem.
I don't see how the substrate being too thin would produce smaller shrooms either....if the mycelium was as it should be I would think the network would get the water/nutes where it needed to go, almost regardless of substrate depth. ....Im also hoping this is the case because I just crumbled and cased for the first time and the substrate depth was only about 1".

well bags, unfortunately that's not really the case if you look in my gallery, you'll see a pint jar with an inch deep layer of substrate (remains of a crumbled BRF cake) those grew plentiful but very small, they dried to tooth pick sized shrooms
they seem to be about the same size on my new casing, only the largest one is about the size of a medium sized cake mushy

substrate depth is very definitely important.
Once you know what you're doing, using bulk substrates, like horsepoo/manure, you'll find that 4-6 inches of susbtrate produces MONSTERS, and flush for up to 4 months.
I always use 5 inches of substrate depth, and no more then 1/4th inch casing layer depth.
I would say view my gallery, and see the images of mine, but I unshared my entire gallery due to the ignorance of ONE shroomery member, i'll re share it some time in the future.

well unfortunately, i had a mixup with some rye grain jars, i had intended to case them straight from rye but since i didn't know which were which i didn't want to mix any strains
so i used one of them for an attempt at spawning it to poo, i used a relatively small amount of cpoo/straw/verm (about 3-4 inches in a 5x5" dish) i'm considering spawning that to a larger amount for a bulk since it's taking off on the straw and poo
is a good amount of rye in your bulk neccesary for nutrients or just for having enough spawn to colonize your bulk substrate? cuz i think i have enough poo/staw/verm spawn to equal about 6-7 rye jars
