It should be like a hard sponge. Not a dried out sponge just one that is a little harder than normal. It should be flexible, i mean if you squeezed on it it shouldn't leave a permanent indent in the cake.

Like said before touchin it is a bad idea, only touch it if you are moving it into the terrarium.
